ADPi (and others) at Georgia College and State University

Just thought some of yall would be interested. When my daughter and I were visiting GCSU in Milledgeville in February, we met several of the collegiates. They were beautiful to look at, and sweet to talk to. Two of the girls came right up to my daughter and myself-actually my daughter saw them first, and said, "Isn't that your sorority?" I introduced my daughter and they talked to her a little about the sorority, and we asked them questions about the college. They told us where the ADPi house was, and it was beautiful from the outside (never went in it)- an older yellow brick home right across from the student center. I was very impressed. Later, I stopped by the Greek Life tables and talked to some of the girls. As I was leaving, the president came up and introduced herself to me. Very cute, very personable-we are VERY well represented at GCSU! Oh, I also met a darling Phi Mu at the ice cream store on campus and talked to her for quite a while. I asked her about whether my daughter should put down that she is an ADPi legacy (I asked the ADPi president this, too) and she said "most definitely!" The ADPi's said that the sororities on campus don't automatically cut legacies of other sororities. She said that, if anything, they want them and rush them hard! She said the other sororities do that to ADPi legacies as well. I thought that was a GREAT and Healthy way to do rush. When I was in school, that often wasn't the case. The other two sororites on campus are DZ, and a brand new Zeta Tau Alpha. Every single girl that I saw, regardless of the jersey she wore, was attractive and personable. Hurray for the Greek girls at GSCU!

WOW! I've never actually heard of anyone else being there except me! I graduated there in 2003-2004 so there are still a few I know from my chapter. I'm so glad you enjoyed not only Greek Life but the campus as a whole. It really is a wonderful school and I felt so prepared going into the real world after my classes. What is her major? and of course...Is she going through rush this fall? That's so exciting!!

I attended grad school at Georgia College from 1987-89. I commuted from Macon, GA. I did enjoy my time there -- (Very good History Dept.!)

I considered a History MA - is it worthwhile? What era is your speciality? If you don't mind my asking, that is!

I taught high school Modern European History & World History for 4 years prior to receiving my M.A. My plan was to return to the classroom, but my career path took a differnt direction into non-profit management & fundraising. I still use the research skills and the presentation skills (along with all of the lessons learned while being a sorority woman, of course!)

Oh...and my thesis was on Jack the Ripper since I had been to London in 1988 which was the 100th anniversary of the murders. Also, having an interest in European history while studying in a small middle Georgia school was a challenge finding primary sources. (This was pre-Internet.) The Georgia College library did have The Times on microfische, so it worked out fine.

That sounds fascinating!! I love history, but I notice that some eras are much more interesting to me than others.

For the past few years, I've been totally immersed in the 20 July 1944 plot to kill Hitler. I have been blessed with a mentor of sorts, and he's encouraging me to continue working on a screenplay about one of the plotters (Marie Vassiltchikov ).

The whole Jack the Ripper phenomenom is interesting - do you agree with Patricia Cornwell's theory, or do you have one of your own?

In 1988, they didn't have the advancements that Patricia Cornwall has/had, so back then -- I agreed with those who thought the Ripper was Aaron Kosminski. (I actually wrote my thesis on whether or not Scotland Yard acted responsibly.) I knew waaaay more back then when I was in the throws of my research via the London Times. Anyway, I think it's difficult to dispute what Cornwall says today.

Hunnie843-I loved the campus, very Southern-looking buildings.And the new dorms-awesome!! My daughter doesn't even know WHERE she wants to go to school, much less what she wants to major in!! But she is looking at Communications. As for rush, wherever she goes-I honestly don't know. I can only hope that closer to time she'll get excited about doing it. The last time we talked, she said she would consider going through, without promising to pledge anything (if offerred a bid, that is.) I told her that it would be a great way to meet people, to be at the college before the crowd gets there, etc. And if she didn't want to pledge anything, at least that way she will know. I will admit, she did like meeting the ADPis at Southern, and touring the house. So, we'll see. Also, she's finishing high school a year early. She decided in October of this year that she wanted to complete her junior and senior years this year. She should be in college fall of 2006. We already have a son in his second year of college, so now we'll have two almost back to back.
NutBrHair-my daughter did a paper last year on Jack the Ripper that I thought was gross (I helped her polish it up.) But she loved it, and her teacher did, too! And, it was very interesting-all the various theories.

I was wondering if somebody could please help me from GCSU. I am currently a sophmore member of Phi Mu in NC and I am considering transfering to GCSU and I was wondering what are the Guidelines for a transfer...and also if there is a current member of GCSU chapter of Phi Mu on here is there anyway that when I come down to look at the school I could maybe meet with some of you to make sure I would feel comfortable with you guys? Thanks

I wouldn't assume to speak for any Phi Mus on the board - I just wanted to give you a little nudge that this isn't the "right" forum to post this in. While ADPi and Phi Mu are pretty close (gotta love the Macon Magnolias

), other Phi Mu members may not see this post here in the ADPi forum - you may (andmay have already done so!) want to post your question in the Phi Mu forum.
