Lightbulb Take heart!

We've had quite bit of discussion lately re: greek ritual-related and other special information being exposed to people other than initiated members of a fraternity or sorority.

While the motivation for these exposes puzzle me, and I'm very much grieved that information and traditions that are special to a group may no longer be privileged, I take heart in this thought:

No matter how much of one's ritual is exposed - and even if it is exposed in it's entirety - it is still meaningless to the non-initiated casual observer. They haven't actually been there. They don't know the nuances of the tradition. They cannot imagine the depth and richness of the bond that is created. And especially if they are former members who have renounced their right to be a brother or a sister, then they didn't fully comprehend the tradition and ritual in the first place.

I mean no disrespect to anyone who found that a particular group (or greek life in general) was not for them, and decided to leave their GLO. I respect that decision (it's not an easy one to make), and I respectfully maintain that if the bond was truly created in a person, it would have been unthinkable for him or her to deactivate.

I make this point to reemphasize that the words and actions alone do not a ritual make. No matter how many of those words or actions are revealed, they are meaningless except to those who truly live them, and feel the completion of the bond through them.

Peace.
