Pike's Coming Back to IU

PIKE fraternity to come back to IU
Consultants will be on campus until end of month

By Maggie Bozich Indiana Daily Student ∙ Monday, October 04, 2004

CAMPUS STORY

Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity will begin colonizing this week on campus. Two chapter consultants will be at the University recruiting men to help build a strong foundation for the fraternity.

Pike was originally founded on campus in 1950, but in 2001 the University expelled the fraternity for alcohol-related violations, according to an Oct. 5, 2001 article in the Indiana Daily Student.

Oren Falkowitz is one of the chapter consultants who will be here until Oct. 30. The fraternity decided to come back to campus in part because of an agreement made between the University and Pikes Nationals when the fraternity left.

"The reason we wanted to go back to IU is because it's a respected University," Falkowitz said. "There is a great demand for our fraternity. I don't think the timing for us coming back could be any better, personally."

While Falkowitz is on campus he will be recruiting men along with Ben Zitek, the other chapter consultant. This recruitment process will not be typical because they will be interviewing men on a recommendation basis, Falkowitz said.

"We are going to recruit on a recommendation process only," Falkowitz said. "We are going to seek men that have been recommended to us for their integrity."

The men they recruit will be Pike founding members, Zitek said. This will allow them the ability to have the fraternity go in the direction they want, he said.

"Since we will be recruiting on a recommendation basis the guys we recruit will be the top scholars, leaders, athletes and gentlemen," Zitek said.

For more information about the Pi Alpha Kappa fraternity visit its Web site, www.pikes.org. Zitek hopes bringing Pikes to the University will provide something new, not only for the campus community, but for the community as a whole.

"The bottom line is we are excited to come to a school of this magnitude." Zitek said. "We know there are a lot of great guys that aren't in a fraternity for one reason or another. We feel we can offer them something in a positive manner."

Oh cool! Yay for Pike! I wonder if they still own their old house or if it's been sold.

It is on Third Street, between Kappa and Pi Phi. I lived behind it on Atwater for a couple years my first time around.

I know the Beta's have made quite the come back at IU - not too sure about their old house though, I don't think they're in it, and I don't think they will be. Rumor has it, they're going to sell it, then go out to the new area by the other greeks and put up a house that will rival the nations best. IU Beta has some very strong, wealthy and supportive alumni - it wouldn't surprise me if the house they put up a top 5 house in the nation.

Pike sold their house to IU last year, which is now school offices....and Beta is in the process of doing the same. they may, however, get a house on the other side of campus and renovate it. Delta Chi's old house.

I was at IU Little 500 weekend and rumor is that Pikes have bought and will tear down Delta Chi's old house.

I dont care how great a new house they will build, that old Beta house had an ubeatable location and so much history. It was old, but they had no problems filling it. I'm sure the new house will be killer though. And its on North Jordan, which I guess isnt as tacky as being on the extension .

Its a huge loss at IU whenever a fraternity or sorority sells their house.

It is very unlikely that the university will be selling any more land to build a new house and when organizations return, they have no where to go.

Exciting! Pike just recolonized here last year, and I have nothing but respect for the organization since then. They picked a bunch of great, really diverse guys who are still all incredibly awesome. Every one I've met has had been completely different from the last but so incredibly interesting and nice, the fraternity as a whole has been really dedicated to essentially every aspect of Greek life, and they are respected by almost everyone on campus (except for the most vehement anti-Greeks). Overall, they are exactly the kind of fraternity that our campus needs more of, and I wouldn't be surprised if they become a top house in the upcoming years.

I hope the colonization at Indiana goes as well as the one here did.

well...we lived in Delta Chi's old house this past year and are moving into Phi Delta Theta's old house for the next few years at least....

from our understanding, Beta, not Pike is getting the old Delta Chi house eventually. The university BADLY wants Beta's old house for its location and is using the DX house as leverage. They most likely wont be tearing it down, but remodeling it. This is why we were told not to trash the house when we moved out.
