Beer in Aluminum Bottles on the Way

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- How much would you pay for a bottle of beer that stays cold nearly an hour longer? Pittsburgh Brewing Co., maker of Iron City Beer, is asking an additional $1 per case.

The brewery has partnered with Alcoa Inc., the world's largest aluminum maker, to produce aluminum bottles that keep beer colder for as much as 50 minutes longer, Alcoa officials said.

About 20,000 cases of the new aluminum bottle beer are en route to as many as 28 states and should be on shelves this week, Alcoa and Pittsburgh Brewing said Tuesday.

The bottles have three times the aluminum of a typical beer can. That gives them superior insulation, Alcoa spokesman Kevin Lowery said.

The beer stays cold longer, yes...but I've never been a fan of the taste from aluminum cans. I wonder if people will catch on?

w/in 18mos. you will see a predominant shift of wine into boxes/hermetically sealed, opaque bags. It's far superior and cheaper.


As far as beer in an aluminum bottle, already Danska vodka comes in a similar 'bottle' - assuming they can seal the bottle similarly, you might see it relatively quickly for low-end beers, but there's a lot of homerism for bottled beer (especially among premium craft brews - cans don't sell at all).

Oooh Danzka is my fave vodka ever! Personally I'm not much of a beer girl at all, I'll take a cosmopolitan (or two) over a beer any day, so I don't think I would necessarily go out and try to find beer that was in an aluminum can, but if it was around and there was nothing better, then yea, I might drink it.

psh. Been going on in Australia, Japan and parts of Europe for awhile now.

You can get it in vending machines or in 4-packs.

i dunno about you, but a beer NEVER lasts over 10 minutes in my possesion...

i guess this would be a good thing for those who like to nurse their beers....

I'm not the biggest fan of beer, but if I drink it, it cannot be from a can. I would definitely not buy beer in an aluminum bottle.
