Abusive ex-girlfriends?

My new boy told me tonite about his ex-girlfriend. He told me that up until about a month ago she was trying to get back with him. He is in no way interested in her (they broke up over a year ago), but he has told me she can act pretty psychotic at times. The reason I am posting is because he and I are attending a BBQ this weekend that she will probably be at. She doesn't know about me YET but I am concerned about how she may act when she sees us together. He has told me that she was physically abusive to him in the past and actually got drunk and punched him in his face at a wedding he invited her to that was a client of his and it obviously embarassed him and things were over then and there. He hasn't really gotten too detailed about everything as this is obviously a painful part of his life he would rather forget. All I know is she had lost her father traumatically a few years ago and her life went downhill since then, drinking, drugs, you name it. I've seen the girl out a few times (before he and I got together and didn't know she was his ex) and she was pretty drunk and sloppy (not trying to pick fights or anything though). Has anyone dealt with a similar situation?
