Greetings to the ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.! My mother is your soror, and this was just one of many factors that has helped influece my interest and love for your sorority. I hear lots of rumors on being a legacy. Will you tell me if they are true, and is it a good idea to mention the fact that I am a legacy at an interest meeting?
Rumor1- They give legacies a hard time
Rumor2- Legacies are automatically accepted
Rumor3- Mother has to be activated to be considered a legacy

If you are claiming legacy status, the person that you are "claiming" under (in this case, your mother) has to be active for at least TWO YEARS prior to you submitting your application. For example, if you were submitting an application for Spring 2000, your mother would have to have been active either with a chapter or generally since Spring 1998.

Just thought I would put that out there.

Being a legacy does not grant you automatic membership. You will be evaluated on the same criteria as everyone else. Whether or not you are given a hard time because you are a legacy depends on my sorors' attitudes within that chapter. If you claim legacy status by your mother, she must be an active soror for a certain number of consecutive years; not just currently active. You can ask her about that.

When the time comes for you to disclose you are a legacy, tell the truth. Some legacies take that title for granted and begin to think they must do nothing to show their worthiness. I think that is why some have been given a hard time. Have confidence in yourself and know that you can stand on your own with or without the status of legacy attached to you.

I'm glad to know that your mother's role as an AKA has had a positive influence on you. I wish you much luck and success!

I guess it depends on the chapter.

When someone is asking about COUSIN, AUNT, babysitter from birth to middle school, etc. there really isn't a discussion.

I have had experiences where the MOTHER was the ONLY person considered as legacy.

i must point this out, and this is with a bunch of pink flowers and green ivy

, a person w/ an ACTIVE (and i did that on purpose) grandmother, or stepmother, or legal guardian could be considered a legacy. everything else stated is correct and quite well said, might i add. ssh1980, good luck on your quest!
