Junior Greek Council

I am the new co-director of the Junior Greek Council at the University of Missouri-Columbia. It is a group comprised of 2-5 freshmen from each chapter (fraternity and sorority) on campus. The members are elected by their respective chapters as people they see leading their chapters in the future.

In the past, the group has been more of a social thing. Anyone have any ideas of what do this year with the group? I would like to see JGC actually accomplish something this year.

What do some other schools do?

Thanks

I was on Junior Panhellenic here at my school my freshman year. We participated in several community service events, including an easter egg hunt for Faculty/Staff children, events at local elementary schools like drug-free fun days and Read Across America Day. We also had a couple fundraisers for different charities. The best is Sweets Fest where each person on council brings a dessert (a big one!!) and then sorority members paid $2 to buy a plate that they could fill up with desserts like a buffet! It was great. We held weekly meetings to plan these events, and once a month we attended Panhellenic meetings (the real meetings) to see how they were conducted and learn about our Greek Community! Hope this helps! I loved being on Jr. Pan, and I'm still friends with all the girls that were on it!!!

Hey! I am so glad to see that you're trying to do something with JGC this year! I was on JGC my freshman year and honestly we did nothing! I know the best thing I remember doing with JGC was going to the food bank and helping out many times. That was a fun and wonderful experience.

I think that JGC members should start going to IFC and Panhel meetings, since anyone can really go right? I think that'd be very helpful for them b/c a lot of freshman have no idea how those two things work.

I don't really have any ideas for you right now but if I think of any, I'll let you know. Congrats on your position!

Well this whole Junior Panhellenic thing is new to me since my school only has 6 people on our regular panhellenic anyway it's not really necessay to have a "junior" panhellenic to help get our new girls involved or interested.. they can just go to the regular meetings and not feel too overwhelemed or intimidated...
but yeah I would suggest why don't you all adopt a philanthropy ? or organize a new member exchange of some sort ?

Since each fraternity and sorority has members on this, maybe you should schedule one or two meeting trips to BOTH IFC and Panhel. I know that as a girl, I always wondered what IFC was about and what they did.

Otherwise the community service sounds like a great idea. Maybe you could also get in on planning an event for greek week?

Cool

This also being somewhat of a foriegn Idea to me not only having been an Alum for long time and knowing that it was not done at My Alma Mater, anything that can be done for promoting Greek Unity would be fantastic!

While it might be a streatch, say an Activity that would include All of the Greek Organizations New Associate members for some sort of function;

Say an overall Charity Funtion for a local Group.

A day where time is donated to a local Charity.

A Social Funtion for The Facualty.

A Social Function for All Greek Chapters.

Unifying Greeks on Campus must start at the Newest Levels where you meet and work with each other!

Once the hill is taken, then it will become easier to promote something of this nature! It would also show initially The entire Campus Greek Unity and help those that were not sure about joining look about coming into the Fold!
