How good is your "hood"?
I left this one in my fraternity's forum, and decided to leave it here too.
I was watching an old movie called "Return to Paradise" about three dudes who went to an Asian country just to kick it. They bought and smoked alot of hash, and got with the prostitutes, whatever. When their vacation was up, two returned to America while one decided to stay. The one that stayed was later busted for the hash they had all bought, and sent to prison. The amount he was caught with was large, so the authorities there accused him of intending to sell-which carries a penalty of death by hanging. This dude's only hope was if his friends returned to the country, admitted their part in it, and served prison time(three years each).
I already know we promote positive social behavior; so in answering the question please refrain from answering it from a religious, moral perspective.
QUESTION: All fraternities/sororities emphasize brotherhood/sisterhood. If the above situation happened to one of your bruhs/sorors, would you return to serve a prison term(and save your bruh's/soror's life), or would you let him/her die? KEEP IT REAL, YALL!!!

Damn, Original Ape! I really think that I would, would, would....well it depends on how close we were. I know that I would want them to come back for me. I am ashamed! I would have to say naw-hell naw! Now you have made me take another long look at myself. Damn!

If it were the same situation as in the movie, I would go back. And I hate that!! Because I would NOT want to go back. But I couldn't not go back, y'know. I really hate that I don't have it in me to always just do what I want to do. Now, if I didn't have anything to do with it, and had not helped buy and smoke the herbs, I would have to say I would not go back.

Thanks for at least answering it. I find it odd that greek-lettered organizations pump brotherhood/sisterhood, yet wont even respond to the biggest challenge to their daily claims. Where are all of the people that were pumping pledging? I pledged, and I would go back-because I couldn't live with myself if I didn't. Plus, I'd be there with the same bruhs I originally went there with. At least we'd all be together. Real Brotherhood; that's what I'm talkin' about!

hey greeks...
that is a deep question...a really deep question.
because several thoughts come to mind but one in particular is:
what if it wasn't your chapter soror/bruh?
even though you are the same organization but there is always that but that pops into people's head.
the reason why i asked is because i run into people from different orgs that treat their chapter soror/bruhs different from their regular sorors/bruhs.
give your honest opinions....
ps....what if it was a trip that involved different greeks who happened to be friends in the same situatiuon????

I am really feeling ashamed you guys. I feel like I should truthfully be able to say that I would go back for my soror.
I really believe that if it came down to it, I could not resist saving myself. I just re-read your post. I overlooked the penalty. I don't think I could let someone die. Gosh!!

i value my friendship with a person just as i value my sorority.
if i was in that situation and it wasn't necessarily one of my sorors....i WOULD go back, because i am a friend.
i wonder if others would do that same??????

Answering honestly, it would be hard as h^&l to do, but if we had both blazed, and I had done the same thing that they had, and then got caught. I would have to go back. I figure that the three of us could make it a year or two.
Plus you have to look at the fact, I would not want my LB to be locked up in some foriegn country by himself. I figure that we could watch each others backs, and be that moral support that you need for something like that.
Now if he was doing it by himself, and he got caught, and I had nothing to do with it. Then he is on his own. Sorry, but choices not chance determine your fate. If he made a stupid choice to go to some far off land, and get high then he will have to pay the price himself.
Part of brotherhood is making sure that your brother/sister learn that they have to account for the things that they do. While we are a single unit, he still maintains a certain amount of individual responsibility.
Peace and Luv,
MN
P.S. That was a good question. I had to think on that one for a few minutes.

I am not a member of any org but as a sisterfriend I find it scary to think that the people who are supposed to care for me like sisters because of the common bond we share would let me die! There is no sisterhood in that. Obviously we must have been somewhat cool in order to be traveling out of the country together. And even if we were not the best of friends, I wouldn't let any associate of mine die let alone someone I would call a soror. I think this question is important for people who are prospectively interested in any organization. Considering the level of things that some people have to go through for these organizations it only leaves one to wonder if it is worth it. If those same people would sooner let you die than to suffer the just punishment for their crime are they worthy of the title of soror or bruh? It is deep.

Without being ethical and moral and damn near BORING you all to death I would seriously have to say I can't answer this question. I just can't. There are tons of if's, and's, an but's. This situation is too wide open. If you want me to say oh because it is my Soror I would go back and risk my own life then NO - plain and simple I will say NO. I would not do it. Because no situation is cut and dry. I just can't answer it. But to show you all were my mind set is read on: - If my Soror was prewarned to leave or risk getting in trouble and she decided to stay then no I would not come back for her or come back to do my time. But if, …. actually I don't have an if … I can't understand why she is staying there anyway, REALLY!! Why would you want to be in a place like that? Okay here is an if on the other side … IF I for some reason was half or MOST to blame then I would HAVE to go back, I can't stand to think some one is dieing on my time or because of me, but I would have to have been a great big part of this.
Anyway, I answered this the best I could!! Tear it a part if you must, at least I was honest!!

Just wanted to comment and say you should think about the type of person you are and not others because you have no control over what or how someone else does what ever it is that they do!! And instead of talking in terms of Soror maybe you should talk about your friends or acquaintances also. I have close friends that are not Sorors, should they be left out because they are not my Soror?
One thing that I start to think about now that I have reread the question and a couple of responses is the old quote some of our parents said to us ... If your friend jumped off a bridge, would you do the same?
P.S. Kisses what type of things are you referring to, to get into an organization?
And lastly I would hope my friends come back for me, but I really have no control over that...when the situation arises I am sure some of these I would rush right back to their aide would turn to hell naw, are you bugging!!!
my Sisterly opinion

LadyAKA
I completely agree with you that it is not just a matter of sorority sisters or brothers but friends as well but I see it as, I would not have any friends that would be so selfish as to let me die rather than serve their time for something they had a part in. I know that my conscience would not let me watch anyone who I considered a friend die because of my selfishness. That is regardless of whether or not they are my friends of just aquintances. I just hope that people would do for me what i am willing to do for others. I metioned specifically members of orgs because that was who Original Ape posed the question to. But Yes LadyAKA I know my friends would do it for me or they would not be my friends.
And the things I was talking about to get into an organization is the mental stress and financial strain that often comes along with the desire to join an organization.
Thanks for letting me clarify Lady AKA. I appreciate that.
