Question about status?

Hi:

I am hoping someone here maybe knows the answer to this question- I was initiated in AOII, but as a result of financial difficulties I had to de-activate (we couldn't afford the fees anymore) and take on a full time job in addition to school at the end of my junior year. Even in my disaffiliated state, I still think AOII is better than anything else out there and am proud to have been a part of it at one time. The ‘official’ people- chapter president, etc. all handled the difficult situation with an incredible amount of integrity and grace and were very kind to me at a time when I really needed it most.

I was too scared and ashamed of quitting to ask at the time, so I never got an explanation of what de-activation as an alumnae would mean. Am I now considered the same as someone who never initiated? Will my daughter be allowed to join if she wanted to in the future, or would she have a problem because of me? I never referred to myself as an AOII after the de-activation, I tried to be as respectful as possible and not present myself as something I was no longer a part of. But I am curious about what, officially, the status of someone who was active but de-activated means in the post-collegiate years. Could I ever be an alumnae?

I asked my pledge mom (we are still close friends) and she had no idea. Maybe someone here can help?

Ok...do you still get To Dragma sent to you? When in doubt contact IHQ and ask them...they can let you know for sure.

I too would recommend contacting IHQ about your status and, if you are in a position at this time (proper time has passed since suspension, etc), about reinstatement. Feel free to PM me if you would like, I just do not think specific procedures need to be discussed on a public forum.

No matter what, your daughter would still be able to become a member of AOII.

When you de-activate, it means that you are not on active status and usually it means you are placed on early alumna status. That happened to several sisters at my chapter and they are considered alumnae with all the perks. That was several years ago--things may have changed since then.

Actually, what most sororities refer to as 'de-activation' is actually suspension - not early alumna status (which there are actually very few reasons that early alumna status is allowed and I know that financial is NOT one of them. . . .).

Rose1, I still recommend speaking with IHQ about the status and your options.
