Cool New York & MacyGray

Why did I just have the pleasure of sitting in Bryant Park, listening to MacyGray (sp.). Now Yall now I am a New York head but I work outside of the state. Anyway, my company also has a small New York office that I work at from time to time. Well this Friday happen to be one of those times, WHY COME (yes why come) I get off the train and see big signs about MacyGray...I don't know her as an artist that well but I was happy to sit my butt on the bench and listen to her it was a great delight. Now I am supposed to be to work at 8:30 and I got to the city at 7:50 why did I not make it to work until 9:15 - I LOVE NEW YORK

Maybe she will be here this weekend and I can catch her at another venue!!

Yeah I think she is awesome also. The reason why you probably haven't heard her is because if you listen to a predominately black radio station she's most likely not to be heard there. In one of her interviews I can't think of where (sorry) she talks about how the predominately black radio stations don't play her music and predominately white radio stations do. Myself I listen to just about everything so I hear her on the radio everyday and her CD is off the hook. I would recommend her stuff to anyone.

Cool

LadyAKA, do you know if she's supposed to be there tonight? It sounds like a wonderful way to spend a night in the city! Especially tonight, I hear the weather is supposed to be great! As you know, the entire city has put out an APB on the sun for the last week or two. The weather has been totally disgusting, it's been raining for forty days and forty nights. (ok, maybe I'm over exaggerating just a tad) What type of music is it anyway?

Macy Gray was performing for Good Morning America. The PBS station here in Chicago recently aired one of her concerts. It was great!

Cool

Yes LadyAKA, I'm a certified New Yawker!
Born in Harlem, USA...raised in Brooklyn! I hear there are lots of free concerts/performances in the parks all over the five boroughs. I have yet to get to one this summer. I usually hang out in the village on Friday nights...there is an awesome restaurant called the Slaughtered Lamb. (I know, it sounds gross) The food is pretty good, its owned by "Grandpa" from the Munsters. I didn't know you were from New York!

Thumbs down

I used to be a fan of Macy Gray until I saw an interview of her with Tavis Smiley. She seemed very unintelligent, she did not express herself very well. Also, a caller inquired as to why there were no African Americans in her first video and she just kind of skated around the question. So, being the instigator that he is, Tavis says, " So, what you are saying to us, Macy, is dont worry about the video, just buy my cd". She never disclaimed his innuendo or anything. That struck a chord with me.

Lady AKA,

I'm jealous! Macy Gray live and for my favorite price, FREE! I had no idea she'd be in the park until I saw it this morning on TV. I have friends in town for the weekend who missed out on a great show because they went over to the wimpy Today show window.

Unhappy

I saw Macy Gray on Good Morning America this morning and I also saw her interview with Tavis Smiley. I know I'm probably the only one but,I really can't stand the sound of Macy Gray's voice. It's so irritating to me.

well I bought the CD back in the winter and i don't care who doesn't like her, but i hate that she is not played on "black" stations. But the same goes for KELIS (Now, I love that girl all-around..she is tight)

I have only heard Kelis on the raido once and I was like...wait is that..it is? like I no her personally or something

But I'm not a new yorker. I live out in the mid west (by Chicago for the geographically challenged ) and I know music varies from region to region

I've been a Macy Gray fan ever since I bought her CD (right after she was nominated for a Grammy for best new artist). Her songs are alternative but she has a way of telling a story. I saw her on BET with Tavis and I must admit I had to turn the volume down when she spoke. I too, thought her responses to the questions were not very coherent. In her defense though, the CD is very nice.

I'm with you Total Elegance. The very first time I heard her voice, it was on a Black radio station, and I think it was her debut that rang something like "You can't spend all of your life tryin' to get high." I liked the music, but I thought her voice was some sort of a joke. They did not play her music for long on Black stations, and the next thing I know, all of her music became mainstream. When she talks about how she got started in the business, with such an irregular sounding voice, sometimes I think she had the opportunity only because someone was hoping to get a good laugh out of her.
