Question Question...People w/more than one set of Greek Letters

I just had a question...I have seen GC members with more than one set of Greek letters and cross over dates. The only thing I could think of is that they are honor societies, but I'm not sure. I know that many GLO's have it so that if you are already in a GLO they won't pledge you. So if anyone cares to answer I would appreciate it.

There are 4 types of GLO's (at least 4 to my knowledge) and they are: Social (also called "general"), Professional, Honorary, and Service.

Normally if you are already an initated member of a type (for example, social) you are not able to become an initaited member of another social GLO.

I'm pretty sure the same thing goes for Professional GLOs (Delta Sigma Pi has rules against dual membership in other professional business GLOs, but it is OK to also be part of a social and honorary or service at the same time as being a member of Delta Sig.)

I'm not sure about honorary or service GLOs though.

I do know that you can be a member of a social, professional, honorary, and service GLO at the same time (although that is a lot of time committments!)

i am a member of both a social greek organization and a honorary greek organization. There are no rules about being in either one or the other, in fact i think most social GLO's would encourage membership in honorary organizations.

Most Greeks will agree that different organizations fill different personal needs.

I joined Alpha Phi Omega as an undergrad because it offered friendship, leadership opportunities, and a ton of community service experience.

I was interested in a social GLO as an undergraduate because I hoped to form the lifelong bond of sisterhood that I had heard about from other Greeks. Unfortunately, I didn't find a chapter on my campus that really clicked for me until I had already become overly involved with many activities. I was offered a bid, but I didn't think I could commit the time that a social deserved. I was already in leadership positions in APhiO, editor of our school paper, etc...

In my junior year of college, I was invited to join 2 honoraries--the French honorary (Pi Delta Phi) and the English honorary (Sigma Tau Delta). These organizations offered experiences in my fields of study and opportunities to network with professionals in these fields.

As a graduate student, I still felt that I had really missed out in being a social Greek, so I looked for some way to finally have the sisterhood I longed for. I investigated Alumna Initiation and GLOs that pledge grad students. Then, I discovered Beta Sigma Phi, and I knew I had found a great fit. I formed a new Beta chapter in my area, and I am having a great time with my sisters!

So, the overlap just means more experiences, more memories, more friends!!

Glos cannot do a cross over!

But service, professional, and honorary are fine with GLOS! Sometimes encouraged as shows a well rounded person who is wide ranging.

You are pretty close.

With socials, the rule on being a member of only one is with both the social and there National orgs (NIC, NPHC, NPC).

With Professionals, the limitation is you can only join one of that TYPE of professional. That is, you can be a member of more then one professional (my dad is a member of a Business and a Law), but you can't be a member of, say, two law GLOs.

With Honorary, since they have such high requirements for joining, AND many are limited to your area of study I don't think you'll see someone who is a member of more then one. And I doubt there are any restrictions.

With Service, there are so few (know of only APO, GSS, and OPA, and GSS and OPA are sororities and APO is co-ed), and they have no restrictions on being a member of more then one.

Service and Social

That was one thing I was worried about when considerring going social- that I wouldn't be allowed to. My friend assured me that all was good so I went and I love it!

It can happen, and it happens often. I'm a member of Delta Gamma (social sorority), Phi Sigma Pi (honor fraternity) and Psi Chi (psychology honor society)!
