Greek Affiliation in Bios?

I happened to see on the Gamma Phi website that the first lady of Idaho is a Gamma Phi...I checked out her bio on the state of Idaho website and saw absolutely no mention of it -- WHY? (I emailed her to ask -- nicely -- if it was seen as unfavorable to list sorority membership -- no reply yet.) When Betsey Bayless was Arizona Secretary of State, there was no mention of her being a Gamma Phi in her website bio so I emailed her and asked why (nicely of course )and the response from press secretary was there wasn't enough room in the bio (????huh????)I have noticed that some beauty pageant candidates do NOT list their sorority affiliation, nor do some actors/actresses/TVstars/athletes/politician/businesspeople, etc...WHY? What are they ashamed of? Can anyone tell me? If we all truly want a good side of Greek membership to be presented to the public, then some of our public personalities should be "used" to help turn things around...I just don't understand why they seem so embarassed....

Cele, I totally agree - I wonder if people think that it will hurt them to declare their affiliation because then people might think they're elitist. I know when I'm old and famous I'll be happy to tell people I'm a Gamma Phi - but considering the school I pledged at, I don't think anybody will be calling me an elitist. I know a lot of my friends' moms are sorority members, but aren't open about it. One of them is an alumna of one of the top sororities at Madison, but didn't mention it to me until I wore my lavalier over to their house. She said it makes people think she's ditzy.

I agree! There is so much negative publicity against GLOs (no thanks to MTV). I think their famous members should do their part to create positive publicity and help repair the damaged reputations suffered due to bad publicity. If you are a member of a GLO, say loud and proud! Don't be ashamed of it, for Heaven's sake!

I think this may be the reason why more political figures don't advertise it -- by many non-Greeks, sororities are looked at as being "frivolous" and that's not something an image most politicians want to promote. And considering how important an image is in politics, I can imagine why they might leave it out.

With pageant competitors, I imagine that most of them are involved in SO many organizations and have won so many awards and honors that they only list the ones that they're most involved in. I bet some of the contestants are so busy with other things that they're mostly "in name only" members of their GLOs, so they don't think it would be fair to list them.

well, as much as i enjoy knowing which celeb was in which glo, i don't think it is a big deal that they don't advertise it. first of all, let's say that this unnamed celeb was a phi mu....and she got arrested for dui. you know that it would be ALL over the news that suzy celebrity was arrested for dui and that she is a phi mu. now that would be negative publicity for the glo!!! there also might be a lot of pressure for a celeb from the glo, whether it be financially or in the media. as for political figures, i think it looks nice that they are in a glo, but don't want to advertise it as a part of their campaigns....for some of the reasons we listed in the resume questions thread...they might not want to lose a vote bc someone was cut from their group back when they were in college!!! and then there may be the part of then that wants to keep it private. they may be proud of their affiliation, but they keep it in their private life...not in their public life. or last but not least, they could be the type that feels that glos end at the end of college. let's face it, not every alum we know is involved as an alum....and some of them don't even mention that they were in a glo.

sometimes I think that -- like Miss America refashioned their image and became a "Scholarship competition" -- somehow Greeks need to fix their image - it'd be nice to have a reality show called Greeks Doin' Good in stead of Sorority Girls Gone Wild -- argh!!

I was thinking the same thing. People generally don't list every professional or social organization they're involved with in a short bio. A bio is generally a brief professional history, not a full length resume.

This could possibly be a reason why other women don't state their affiliations. After college, if they remain involved, they are usually involved in many other activities--many related to their career. As much as they might treasure the years they were collegians, there's only so much room on a bio form.

There's always the possibility that these women just aren't active anymore.

This one gets my vote...................

I know that the Congresswoman we gave a certificate of achievement to at convention last year isn't (since she's in my area).

I think maybe some congressmen/congresswomen, actors/actresses, etc etc do not list their GLO membership because it's not something they are "into" anymore.

Even though sorority/fraternity is a life-long committment, unfortunately, not everyone thinks of it that way. They see it as something they had fun with in college and that stage of their life is over.

I would definatley love to see more Greeks reveal their GLO membership! .. and better yet, I would love to see them all get involved with the GLO again

Kathy Cox did have her Kappa Kappa Gamma membership listed in her bio online and elsewhere -- at least when she was the state rep from this area -- have not looked at her bio since she was elected...not sure why she did not pay dues this year ---
