ooookay, heres my $19.46....
As a sister of Tau Beta Sigma at a small rural primarily white Pennsylvania school - with both orgs, and both co-ed... I think that all chapters should be single sex.
Things Ive noticed in the NED:
Clarion (my school)
Sisters: 9
Brothers: 23
Now that isnt bad, but we have one male. He is leaving this semester. The Kappas have a good mix of sisters and brothers.
James Madison U
Sisters: 4
Brothers: 48
The sisters are all female, but a co-ed chapter.
The brothers are a good mix.
BUT.... our single sex chapters at HBCU's are STRONG. They turn out IN FORCE to events and have so much spirit. Being single sex makes them stronger! Yes we all have a bond of music, BUT... having a gender bond can make an org stronger.
ALSO - Why does TBS not recruit males easily?
Well, think... if you are a male, would you want to join a sorority?! No. You wouldnt want to be called a sister. If you had a choice, you would rather be a brother of a fraternity. Women can go either way, cos we really dont care...
Being co-ed has hurt many TBS chapters, and "forcing" single sex chapters at schools to go co-ed would just encourage Tau Beta Sigma chapters to fold.
From a sisters side here... these are my views and judging from things happening in the NED, this is what I see happening. And when this was brought to our attention at NED Convention and the delegates were asked for questions - they wanted to ask the KKPsi coucil - the coucil declined to talk.
I just want to say - Does Kappa Kappa Psi really want to be the reason that Tau Beta Sigma folds nationally? Do you really want to be the ones to go up to Wava and say "Sorry, but we just needed to take over" Schools benefit from both orgs, and again - this is an NED view here - Most KKPsi chapters - ours included - hand out many many many bids to the band... get MC's and then think "Oh wait, we dont like this person..." they think QUANTITY over QUALITY....
Again, just my $19.46

As a sister of the Omega chapter of Tau Beta Sigma, joint Omega is a lot different than what you had said. Our TBS chapter has 31 active members, and our KKPsi chapter has 30 active members. Our TBS chapter has 3 males, our KKPsi chapter has 5 female members. There are two active sisters who were pledges of KKPsi, and one of them is our Western District President...the other being myself.
The Western District prides itself in it's joint relations, and it certainly showed itself at our convention in March. Here at the University of Arizona, the joint Omega chapters rely on each other not only in service, but on the field, in the concert halls, in the meeting room, and outside of the world of chapter.
I can't fathom TBS Omega 'folding', nor any other TBS chapter in the WD. I helped start a TBS only colony at the University of Utah...trust me, the sisterhood will always be strong.

Here at Delta Omicron (TBS) our SISTERHOOD is strong, but not so with our membership numbers. Part of the problem is that we are small and KKPsi is big, so they draw people who chose which to join based on the size. There are many excellent brothers here at Clarion that are a better 'fit' so to speak with our Tau Beta Sigma chapter. Why did they choose Kappa Kappa Psi instead? It's much easier to join a co-ed fraternity than co-ed sorority. Being co-ed doesn't hurt us in spirt, sisterhood, or love . . . it hurts us in the numbers game, which in the end is sometimes what it takes to keep a chapter open. I love Kappa Kappa Psi, and the majority of the brothers here, but I think it bears saying that anyone who knows our organizations at Clarion well will admit that Tau Beta Sigma is smaller in numbers but overall has more love and togetherness while Kappa Kappa Psi is bigger and more visible but has many internal problems and fighting that they attempt to keep hidden. This is not always visible to a new band member when it comes time to make a decision and there have been people that later regretted their choice. I don't say any of this to 'bad mouth' my brothers, because I love them dearly but rather to illustrate some of what can happen on a campus with two co-ed chapters and a small band program. Luckily we have a lot of prospective MCs for next year that already love the sisterhood and are excited about the possibility of joining. I know that I'm leaving my chapter in capable hands when I graduate in a little over a week.

Hey SuperSister congrats on graduating! Now, for the question at hand - I think it depends on each individual chapter. But we at Eta Zeta like our sisterhood! We are all females, and larger than our KKPsi. Part of the reason we are so much larger is b/c we all love one another and devote time to our sisterhood. While KKPsi is co-ed they lose a bit of their brotherhood. I'm not saying it should be like that for all chapters. But it works whether well for us!
Supersister I PM'd you!!!!
