Post trying to get a convo started:men views on women.

First of all. Howdy Professor...I haven't spoken to you in a minute.

Well this is the deal...(I posted this on another board but I didn't get that much feedback.)

I was wondering what do you guys feel about women's attire when they going out. My girl and I got in an argument over this, because I said she dresses like a "dyke:" tim boots, jeans and a t-shirt. That's her regular attire whether we're going to a club, that's dress to impress, or if she's going out on a date. And for me she says I over do it. Like I'll wear a nice tank top or backless shirt with some boots(calf or to the knee), tight fitting jeans or a skirt.

She says the way I dress guys take me as high maintenance. I say guys think she's a dyke. She doesn't wear make-up or anything like that. And I only wear make-up for when we're going out.

I'm not saying everybody has to wear make-up or tight jeans.

And her outfits aren't of low quality either. I mean here tims cost more than my tommy boots so it's not about money. It's just that I tried to give her subtle hints on what to wear and she says I'm trying to change her.

Just wondering what ya'll think. Is it wrong of a friend to suggest she "dress more feminine."

Maybe it's because she dates thugs...and I date professionals.

Basically, my question is this does clothes matter? And how would you suggest to your friend that it does matter(I mean for when you going out or on a date or something.) And do you think because of what you wear attracts different people.

Prettysqueaky,

My style of dress is totally in alignment with my personality. I typically dress, I guess you'd say "sexy-chic". My clothes aren't necessarily revealing but they do suggest a whole lot! I know that I get hated on when I go to the club because of how I'm dressed. But my style of dress is my personality! My girlfriend, on the other hand, dresses extremely conservatively and is a registered 'closet-freak'. I can say this because I've told her the same dayum thing!
Unless asked for advise, I personally don't criticize my friends for what they wear. I feel that you should dress true to who you are. If your girl is truly feeling the 'round-the-way' girl look and she's that way inside and out than so be it! However, if she's dressing that way and wondering why she's only attracting a certain kind of man, I would then quite frankly tell her why.

Hey,

I do understand, b/c my girl is not "Fashion Smart". I mean, she dress glossy, she will not dress the occasion. We go the store, she dressing likes it Black Tie Night! But, she is from the south. I don't know.

Your girl, educate her on style and apprearence when to dress for the occasion, please! Don't want to see another woman dress in Timberlands at a resturant.

SO WHAT'S YOUR POINT? DON'T GENERALIZE JUST BECAUSE YOUR GIRL IS FROM THE SOUTH. I AM FROM THE SOUTH AND I KNOW HOW TO DRESS, REGARDLESS OF THE OCCASION. SHE MUST JUST BE COUNTRY! STRAIGHT UP! YOU CHOSE HER, NOW, IF YOU DON'T LIKE HOW SHE DRESSES, SCHOOL HOMEGIRL! DON'T PLACE THE BLAME ON THE FACT THAT SHE IS FROM THE SOUTH. PLACE THAT BLAME ON THE MERE FACT THAT SHE HAS NOT BEEN EXPOSED TO FASHION, ETC.

Thumbs up

I agree with AKA2D '91 wholeheartedly in refernce to her beign from the South. People automatically equate Southern style with Country. I'm sorry but those two are not one-in-the-same.

Myself, I dress pretty conservatively. The sexiest that I will get is showing a little cleavage. I believe that the way a person dresses is a direct representation of their personality. My girlfriends kill me when they go out looking like hoochies and then complain that men don't respect them. The quote "you cant judge a book by it's cover" may be the liberal thing to say, but in reality, first impressions are the lasting impressions. Before you even get to pick the person's brain, by holding a conversation with them, you decide by mere outer appearance whether you even want to go that far. It is something to think about.

Might I add too, that I am very conservative in my dress. Also, there are people from all over these United States that cannot dress, they too, could be country bumpkins! Better than that, just lack fashion savy!

Alpha...I hope that you don't become offended by the caps in my previous post, but I still feel the same. You cannot judge an entire area, just because of ONE not having fashion sense....

Come on...YOU know better than that!

PrettySqueaky,

Have I met you at the mall (lol). Actually, what I find humorous is that you suspect I have a strong opinion about this topic and you are correct. I was best dressed in high school, college and continue to hold it down. I think a person should have clothing that fits the function and express ones personality. I prefer a H I G H maintenance women - my girl is the epitome of perfect grooming - nails, heels, lipstick, hair, outfit, etc. However, I do recognize that everyone does not favor this look. In the case you present, I see nothing wrong with suggesting to your friend that she may want try another look. She may not like skirts so perhaps you can suggest a pant suit, body suit or even slacks and shirt - sorry - blouse in this case (lol). If she still rejects the idea you have at least planted the seed. More importantly, I think you should remember that clothes don't make the person; they only enhance. A true friend can overlook a fashion faux paux!!!!

Apparently, no one did. If so I don't apologize for freedom of expression.

Dyke isn't anything more than a slang term. You can take it how you want to. I wasn't saying she dressed "gay or like lesbian." I said like a dyke. Where I'm from a Dyke is a tough dressing broad (jeans, boots, flannel, etc...) They're aggressive (not neccessarily a homosexual, just an attitude.) Ya know how they say a guy is sweet or his sugar in his blood; doesn't mean he's gay but he has feminine ways.

Hi Professor moderator and friends,

I was surfing greekchat and ran across this topic and it's quite interesting.

I guess I'm that woman that is hard to figure out. I think someone mentioned that their dress reflects their personality. I must agree....my personality is difficult to figure out. I wear my suits Monday through Thursday. It's nothing for me to throw on my nalia or alumni gear on Fridays. I will throw a scarf on my head like the ganstas to go to the gym but I most definitely dress for the ocassion... I already have my attire lined up for all of the holiday parties coming up.

My best friend (an AkA) often jokes about how I came to college wearing flowers everyday....I'm so glad I've evolved.

Great topic.
