If this is formal recruitment that we're talking about there is NO way we could do that at my school. That would be a rush infraction. We aren't even allowed to give them things during the parties. Any drinks that they have we have to grab before they walk out the door, or that would be considered "giving them things" However, if this is informal recruitment, I don't see why there would be any problem with it. There are few rules during informal rush!

Well, if Panhel did it, and they did it in such a way they hit most of the freshman women (aka, they don't just give candy to the pretty girls), it would be fine. On most campuses, however, it is verboten for a sorority or individual member to give any freshman woman anything before formal rush starts, unless they have a prior relationship (aka, your younger sister is a freshman - you can get her a birthday present).

It's not a police state; if you loan a freshman a pen and she forgets to give it back, I don't think anyone would care. But anything like giving out something on a massive scale, even if it's inexpensive like candy, is a big no-no.

After formal rush is over, the rules are more lenient ... however, I would say it might still be considered tacky, depending on the campus.

I'd chalk it up to the campus, and when Recruitment is. We recruit second semester, so first semester (when the frosh move in) is a free-for-all. We have lemonade booths in front of each freshman dorm, and it attracts a lot of girls, but we don't get in trouble for it. Now, if we did that next week, a few days before Recruitment starts, we'd be in a world of hurt...but only on a Panhel level. My school isn't very Greek, so no one else would care, not even the fraternities.

Weird. My school held rush second semester, too, and they enforced the rule first semester. Of course it was difficult to police ... and I'm not saying certain groups didn't break the rules occasionally.

Yeah, at my school we have formal rush second semester, and there are very strict rules about sorority women even *talking* to freshmen during fall semester.

Is it Panhellenic as a whole/women operating on behalf of Panhellenic, or is it one group?

Panhel - fine.
One group - not fine.

Although if it is one group, it sounds like they think they are in some elementary school election. That's the last I knew candy to have any effect on people's judgements.

Ok first of all the candy was just with the message which was to have a good semster. it was meant to be something nice to give along with the message. What would happen if this is against the rules???

At my school, a rush infraction was usually penalized with the loss of a certain percentage of the pledge class, letters of apology to the other sororities, loss of bid day mixer, & a letter from the Panhell advisor to your National HQ. As for whether this would count as an infraction or not? Depends on where you are.

re: what would happen

I think the best answer to your question about what would happen if you handed out candy would be to check your Green Book and/or your Panhellenic bylaws.

I'm kinda concerned about your motive for asking. . .you haven't told us if your group is NPC or not, what campus you are from, etc. It seems like you are looking for a specific answer. . . I'm taking that to mean that you have done this activity already and have either been caught or hoping not to be caught. (I don't know. . .it's hard to use intuition on a message board!) Why are you wanting this question answered?

I understand if you want to keep your GLO's name quiet (and that is fine), but to be honest, we cannot answer this question truthfully for you. Only you/your bylaws can do that.
