Subliminal Messages
Do you guys think these things work? I can't remember, but I think they might be illegal too. Okay, after seeing the subtle little ring image in the movie, I was a little verklempt...Rhode Island...it is neither a road nor an island...discuss.

Does anybody remember the "Saved by the Bell" episode where Zack used subliminal messages on all the girls in school?
"Zack Morris is a blond Tom Cruise!"
I think I have officially proved my theory that nearly anything can be related back to a "Saved by the Bell" episode.

Haha, that's too funny. The first thing I thought about when I saw the title of this thread was that Saved by the Bell episode! Glad to know I'm not the only one

I remember something (though it might be an Urban Legend) about movie theaters flashing images of cokes, popcorn and candy trying to increase concession sales.
Does anyone remember the "naked woman" in the liquor print ad?
Who knows? I would think if you are susceptible to suggestions on ANY level, there might be something to it. Any psychology majors want to chime in?

I'm a psych major! Everything that I've read in my text books says that subliminal messages are ineffective. So I wouldn't recommend using the "Saved by the Bell" technique on your crush!

i think the jury is still out on subliminal messages. even if they do work, there are some ethical questions about using it.

Subliminal advertising in broadcasting is illegal. It was a really big deal back in the 50's and 60's.
I don't know whether it works or not.
I suspect the answer is like anything else -- some techniques and messages will work, others won't.

I had a mass communications class in college and they showed us some of the liquor ads with subliminal advertising. There was one for a brand of vodka that had a woman's naked backside blended into the picture, a cigarette ad where a topless woman was blended into the field of grass, and in the opening sequence of Batman and Robin where they're fighting the hockey players, there's three or four penises in the background.

I was thinking of the Subliminal Guy from SNL. you want me If you don't remember you want me this guy would slip subliminal messages you want me into his conversations in order you want me to make women want him.

Maybe I was just hearing voices... but there was a Christmas commercial that Gap did last year... One of those dance routine ones. I swear I heard "Buy Gap" whispered quietly under the music towards the end of the commercial... am I alone here?

agger_rob-That's it! I forgot about the cigarette ad!
Along the same line, there used to be an entire series of motivational tapes that "worked" subliminally while one would sleep.
Maybe I could make a tape that says-"You WILL buy your wife a new car. YOU will buy your WIFE a new car..."
