Urgent problem

My neice's sorority just announced that they are closing the chapter immediately. She is just a sophomore. Is there anyway she can deactivate from this one and join another one if the other sorority says it's ok?

NPC Unanimous Agreements governs this. Short answer: no. Once you are initiated into an NPC sorority, you are ineligible for membership in any other NPC sorority.

Note: this assumes your niece's sorority is part of the NPC and not a local or other type of sorority.

I am sorry to hear that. If she has been initiated, she is bound to this NPC sorority for life. Depending on the situation, she and her sisters will likely transition to alumnae status, either now or at a set date in the future. I'm sure this situation will leave a bad taste in her mouth, but remind her that her sorority is SO much bigger than the one chapter at her school. She may find her way back to being involved through social, networking, or volunteer work as an alumna.

I would encourage her to check out the many other opportunities on campus since she has three years to go. There might be women's social groups that would fulfill her desire for friendship and fun social events. Or a co-ed fraternity like Alpha Phi Omega that supports service and leadership. Or a local or multicultural sorority that may be open to rushing NPC members. At my college, there were a handful of women who were involved in both their NPC chapter and a local Christian sorority....I have no clue how they had time for both but I know the local chapter didn't restrict membership to non-NPC-ers.

Also...remind her that the sisterhood doesn't stop just because the chapter is closed, unless you let it. Maybe they won't be having meetings, mixers and rituals, but that's only part of sisterhood. The things I honestly think of the most when I remember college are goofy things like watching the soaps and taking hideous required classes together so we could stand them. No matter what they are still sisters.
