disgusting sigma pi tradition
Allright, so i found out something that really disturbs me and i do not know what to do about it!! I am in a sorority at a Michigan college that has a chapter of sigma pi at it. Well, i was at there house last week and it was their pledges "hell week" everyone knew this b/c of what they were wearing and how wasted they were. So anyway, i went upstairs to a personel brothers room that i knew to use the bathroom and i discovered two small boxes with rats in them. The extremly small boxes had not been cleaned in days and the smell was overwhelming. Needless to say i questioned a brother about this and since he was intoxicated he told me that during "hell week" the pledges have to carry a small animal with them at all times. He then proceeded to tell me stories about what they did to these animals, since the pledges become so recentful of them the all died. As an avid animal rights activist, i was horrified and sicken by the treatments of these small animals. One of the rats was completely hairless and i found out that the pledge had died it's fur so many times it fell out. Needless to say, i waited a little while longer in the night, and with the help of some of my sorority sisters, we stole the rats.
So now i do not know what to do. I don't want to cause trouble for my sorority but this is an absolutely disgusting "tradition" that i can not beleives continues today. Does this happen at other Sigma Pi chapters or is my school just lucky to have such an upstanding fraternity? Please, any comments or insights would be appreciated. I would also like to hear from other sigma pi's. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Most "hazing" like that is different from chapter to chapter. Some chapters do stuff like that, and others are smart enough to realize it is stupid and don't. They fall in the first category.

I agree with Brian. Thankfully, chapters like the one you described are definitely in the minority. Most GLO chapters are smart enough to realize that encouraging new members to commit stupid acts in order to be initiated is harmful to the entire organization and isn't condoned by their National Headquarters or their fellow Greeks. Sigma Pi is a wonderful organization, and I'm sure that the vast majority of their brothers would not find such a story amusing in the least.

Whether it be an Individual Chapter or not, this is totally ridiculous! They SHOULD be Yanked!
I would love to put these Butt Munches in a Cage or Box and let them sit for a while in their own Crap!
Dont think they would like it very long!

god bless america. thanks disgusting. i love animals so much. i can't even stand to think of this. i know you don't want to cause trouble for your sorority, but something should be done about that crap. even if it means going to their advisors or the school. gawd. i'm glad that you guys at least got the rats. but it's not like they can't get a few more rats from a local pet store.

Just playing Devil's Advocate so don't flame me, but....
What if the story that Kinney9 got from the DRUNK brothers/pledges is not accurate. I'm not excusing the behavior or saying that it isn't true, but I know I have heard many a TALL tale from DRUNK fraternity brothers about alleged hazing activity (we've all heard the stories about the goats). I can't say what would be going on with the hairless rat, but is it possible that someone owns a snake and that the rats are food??
If the story is in fact true then yes I find it disgusting and it should definitely be reported as hazing and the school and Sigma Pi IHQ should take the appropriate action.

Kinney9, you said in the posts that the pledges grew so resentful that all the rats died? You stole dead rats? For what purpose.
As far as what to do . . . The reason why Greek Houses don't turn eachother in is not only loyalty, but the fact that each house usually has enough technical violations that everyone could get caught for something . . . So if all the chapters start reporting the other chapters there won't be many left before long.
If I felt really strongly about this, and had the courage of my convictions, I would have a heart to heart directly with the President of that chapter and say: Look if this continues I am going to contact(insert militant animal rights group here) tell them the whole story, and you can deal witht he load of shit they will bring down on you and your whole chapter you stupid peckerhead. (You might not want to call him a peckerhead . . .).
That should stop it if he takes you seriously. Anything else you do officially, like contact the admin or Sigma Pi Headquarters will most likely have one of two effects: if they choose both to believe you and act, that chapter of Sigma Pi will be gone . . . If they choose to disbelieve and/or not act . . they will give you a frustrating run around.
Your choice.

Thats a good point! I have made up wild stories just for entertainment purposes and the fact that someone is asking something none of their business. Even to good friends.

Kinney9, my question to you would be: if you're on the level, why did you register as kinney10 within minutes of the first registration?

Q. How is this thread like the hit movie Lord of the Rings?
A. They both have trolls.

aww c'mon
this story either sounds fishy, or kinney got fed a line. nobody, but nobody lets people know what their pledges do. i've been through, or have seen, it all. the cardinal rule of hazing is keep you f-ing mouth shut. i just don't buy it.

i just wanted to add to what teke4life said, and mention that usually during "hell weeks," or "i-weeks," when hazing is taking place no one but a brother or pledge is allowed to be in the house. no one wants to display hazing in front of others. no one wants a situation where the wrong person sees something and the chapter is busted

I'd say it's probably a BS story but who knows. Everyone has heard the stories about I-week, some of us have even spread them for fun to our associates/pledges, but almost all hazing stories that anyone hears of are made up because only brothers know what happens during I week.
And who said the Goat were just made up?

Alright, time to get a Sig Pi's opinion here.
Do all chapter's do that? No. How do I know? Because my chapter doesn't do shit like that at all. That's a little extreme for my chapter. All I know is that in EVERY social fraternity there's hazing at one of their chapters. Could be worse than that, could be less. But non the less, there's hazing. Also, I don't think that story is entirely true because you probably wouldn't be allowed it the house durring Hell Week and it was probably a made up story. IF you want cruelty to animals, one fraternity here hung goats heads infront of all the girls houses doors. That's respect for an animal eh?
