Question Social ideas

My chapter (well we'll be a 'chapter in 5 days) is SERIOUSLY in the need of some social traditions. We have a few challenges: Low budget, small house on a DRY campus.

That's about it actually.

With those limitations in mind we're trying to figure out what kind of parties we could do where we don't end up with a bunch of bored people playing card games... (yes, we have already taken care of the first step, card games are banned from social events)...

But does anyone have anything that's worked for them that is fun, original and doesn't cost a whole lot of $$?

Have a party at a bar. We have the same problem here at SWT. It is dry. One thing we did to combat this problem was buy a ranch. It is only 15 acres, but it is in the middle of BFE. It is a short drive, but well worth it. The cops, nor university ever pays visits to us (knock on wood). Have a group of guys rent a house, or a bunch of apts. next to each other. I am not sure if you know the reputation of SWT, but it is not one that is condusive to a dry housing situation. Good luck,

This subject is right up my alley. I am currently the social chairman for my house and we are constantly looking for new, creative ideas for social events.

I will have to say that one of our largest events of every year is Blackfoot/Whitefoot. First of all...this will only work if you have an ATO chapter at your school. This social event honors both our establishments at VMI. It is a weeklong event filled with date dashes, barbeques, and a grand finale of a date party at the end of the week. It is a lot of fun and everyone looks forward to it every year.

I can give you more ideas, but it sounds like our financial situations are quite different. Hopefully this one helps out. Let me know if you would like some others.

Blackfoot/Whitefoot is something I've wanted to see done for a long time. We just have to wait a few years for certain ATO's to be gone. These fellas seem to pick fights at every single party they're present at. My little brother (blood brother) is an ATO though at the same school so I'd love to see it happen.

We can use any ideas that we can get!

Like I said before...money could be the deciding factor for you but here are a few more things my chapter does.

At least once a month we plan a date dash. This is where the executive committe decides on a date and we don't let anyone else know about it until the day before. It makes everyone have to run out to find a date...a lot of times resulting in inviting a perfect stranger from class or someone they just saw walking on campus. Everyone then takes their dates out to a specified bar that evening. This does not require any funds from the chapter. The bar is not rented and everyone pays for their own drinks.

We also try to do joint date parties with other fraternities. Coming up in April, we are having one with the men of Delta Upsilon. We have not really done anything with them before and we also just found out that they are going to be our Homecoming partners for next year. We have rented out a bar and the theme is going to be BIKERS. Neither of our houses have used this theme for some time. We are really looking forward to it.

On March 28 we will be having Sigma Lu. There is a tiny little hole-in-the-wall bar called The Lu and every year around St. Patty's day we just have a small date party where we take our dates there and hang out.

It has been a tradition to have a party called Sunset Revival here at K-State. The street we live on is called Sunset and in the past, 3-4 fraternities have joined to throw a big "concert". Our chapter advisor doesn't like this party that much so we are trying to work with him this year in order to make it happen. We have started to plan everything so we can propose it to him for approval. Our house along with Sigma Phi Epsilon plan on participating. Our house sits on top of a huge hill so we construct a stage at the bottom for bands and people just sit on the hill to watch. We have about 6 local bands lined up for the gig. We are going to hire a catering company to handle the alcohol in order to relenquish some of the responsibility. We are planning to have the bands play from about 1:00pm to 10:00pm and the shut the whole thing down as to not get a noise complaint. The party would then move down the street to the SigEp house for after hours. Hopefully we will be able to talk our advisor into it. It would be a blast.

Lets see, we also have our White Rose Formal every year in some other city. Last year we had it in Kansas City. This year it was in Wichita, KS. We make reservations at a hotel and have dinner served there and then dancing afterwards. It was a lot of fun.

Thats it off the top of my head. My suggestion is to have some small date parties or date dashes. They are really inexpensive and not too time consuming on the part of those planning it.

Partying Sigma Nu style

Hey! I couldn't help respond to your delima because my boyfriend is a Sigma Nu here at the University of Tennessee, and they just finished Snake Daze (their party week). What they do is they just have about 3 partys during the week and a lot of the times the brothers will supply the beer themselves. And we're a dry campus too, so they'll have a lot of their bigger parties off campus at their "party house". But here is a fun thing you can do! Here there philanthropy event is Fowl Fest, and it's pretty much just an excuse for them to watch sorority girls roll around in the mud. What it is is a few little field events, like a slip-n-slide relay, tug-o-war, spinning around a bat and then trying to carry an egg in a spoon across a field etc. It's a lot of fun, and all the sororities come out, it gives them A LOT of publicity and they get to know the girls really well. All the money they raise goes to the winning sororities philanthropy. Or ya'all can pick your own whatever. I just thought since you guys just started that would be something fun for you to do to get your name out there. Good luck!

Blackfoot Whitefoot

I was just trying to find out the exact format of how blackfoot whitefoot is done around the nation. On my campus Sigma Nu and ATO have been enemies for some time so I have finally mended the two and am attempting to set it up. If someone could help me out that would be great.
