Georgia (UGA) Greeks Discourage Hoop Skirts

http://onlineathens.com/uga/2015-03-...aternity-video

The Panhellenic and IFC presidents at Georgia have issued a message (see above) about appropriate / non-appropriate costumes and themes, saying, in part:

“The student leadership, staff and advisors agree that Antebellum hoop skirts are not appropriate in the context of some events. We will continue to review costuming and themes for future events to ensure their appropriateness for our organizations.”

Well, that seems to leave the door open a little bit for "the context of some events" to permit AHSs, or am I missing something (it happens occasionally)?

Talk during Monday’s UGA meeting at UGA was about presenting the university and Greek organizations in a good light, and not inviting negative attention, said Victor Wilson, UGA’s vice president for student affairs.
I'm always fascinated when the message is about how we're portraying greek life rather than how we're changing practices to be more equitable and explaining that rationale to students. It doesn't feel like there's much of an effort being given to helping members understand why antebellum costumes are problematic.

I agree. When we just put down these rules, rather than have solid diversity programming we just further that "us vs them" mentality and encourage our members to feel like they're being picked on, smothered with rules, told what to, and all of those other phrases that make these behaviors seem more like fighting the man (or for free speech) as opposed to needlessly offensive or careless.
