A rather sadly odd hazing at Univ. of Conn.

My jaw dropped when I first heard of this. This is so far out of dumb, dumber and dumbest. Down right stupid and so unnecessary. Why did a Fraternity get itself involved in a Sorority hazing? http://www.nbcconnecticut.com/news/l...249127751.html

The really strange thing is she is a current sister. This indecent took place Thursday, she woke up Friday in the hospital and by Friday night she was giving interviews on the news. I am not saying it did not happen, or does not constitute hazing, but the whole situation is very strange.

It's strange that someone was hazed, ended up in the hospital, and reported the incident immediately?

No, just that she was getting interviewed on the news about three hours after getting released. I would absolutely expect that she reported it immediately, to both the University and to the police. The news stations she also contacted at the same time. I would expect to be shaken up, and exhausted from being in the hospital, not necessarily being interviewed by four news stations the same day I was released. I applaud her for speaking out about the incident, the timing it just all really fast.

This part of the second article was interesting to me.

Quote:
Holt said since joining the sorority last fall, she has not experienced any hazing involving drinking but said after speaking with police, she might have been involved in another hazing incident.

Minus the alcohol**, there are GLOs in which some of these types of things are part of tradition. That includes fraternities and sororities handling each other's "pledges."

It can still be considered hazing in certain environments and especially since this article deals with NPC and IFC GLOs that tend not to have this practice. But some of you need to realize that there is a world outside of what you are accustomed to.

**Some NPC and IFC chapters have engaged in "physical hazing" but NPC and IFC are more likely to engage in "alcohol hazing."

Probably the hospital not she made the initial call to the police. And either the police or the hospital could have called the media.
And I wouldn't consider them shaming the victim. Here's the scenario I picture:
Cop: have you ever been hazed?
Vic:no
Cop: have you ever been made to drink when you didn't want to?
Vic: well,umm, yes.
Cop:have you ever been made to do anything embarrassing or humiliating?
Vic:well, there was that one time...
Cop: you were hazed.

DrPhil: Would you please clarify/amplify what you mean by "tradition" and "world outside of what you are accustomed to"?

I do not know anything about the KKG Chapter but the SAE house is far from being one of our oldest Chapters.

And no matter how one looks at it, the actions by the Brothers of the house, The Chapter, The Brotherhood violated everything and anything one can think of in terms of RM, ethics, morals, code of conduct, policies and more than likely a few laws ginve the information from current news reporting. Which perhaps why is is outside of the what we are accustomed to. And expect from our members.

Or is your comment more innocent than I took at first glance? Are you talking about "Big Brother/Little Sister" type events?

That goodness they ran into an RA when they tried to dump her at the dorm who had enough sense to make them take her to the ER. This could have been a tragedy rather than just an embarrassment and possible charter review for these chapters. If that woman had been left alone in her room with alcohol poisoning, she clearly could have died.

This story maybe one of those that evolves under investigation. It does seem that she is a 21 year old Active member.

If she was an active when this occurred, it can still be classified as hazing but the implications are different.

That is what I feel. There seems to be more to this story than is being initially reported. I am from CT and it has literally been on every news station every night since Friday with different snippits and slightly different information. I am interested if these two chapters have gotten in trouble together before, it seemed to have been insinuated by one of the stations. It is surely just a strange (and clearly unfortunate) story. And yes, thank goodness for good RA's.

Reading her complete post, and knowing what GLO she belongs to, I think she is saying that while this type of hazing may be surprising or seem unusual in an NPC or NIC/IFC context, it might not be as surprising or unusual in another context, such as NPHC fraternities and sororities.
