Thinking of rushing this fall, but...
I am thinking of rushing for the fall, which is around next month or so. I am planning on attending one of the IFC informational meeting. However, am not quite sure if I would get in or fit well.
I am Chinese, and part English to an extent, even though I have brown eyes and black hair. I am technically 10% British, but nearly everyone I met in middle and high school though I was full-Asian. I am not exactly jocky, and rarely exercise pass 10th grade after when I was on varsity baseball for a year. Can't say that I am the stereotypical image of a fraternity guy...you know tall, athletic, great looking, and party hard. Heck, my parents got angry when my brother got his first drink at age 20.
On the whole, I don't know any upperclassmen or any fraternity brothers at all. Mainly due to the fact that I live in an all-freshman dorm and taking all intro classes. So my "connection" or whatnot is not on the upside.
I go to a major university in Conn, and I know that last year 85%+ of the guys who got a bid was either white, black, or well connected with certain fraternities through their relatives (a legacy, I believe).
My older brother said that when he rushed at another college 7 years ago, none of the houses there had an Asian in them...except for 2 houses that had a couple blacks and Latinos. He only got a bid because he was on the Texas football team.
I am not sure how to approach rushing, and am not too sure of what I could do to make me "fit" to most houses. I know race and looks are not supposed to make-or-break...but it does happen regardless of what "laws" the national offices set.

First: Seriously? Why is it every stereotype about us sticks, but when it comes to everything else people know they are just stereotypes? Yes, I am generalizing.
Second: Texas recruitment =/= Connecticut recruitment
Third: You won't know unless you try.
Fourth: YOU LIVE IN TEXAS AND DON'T KNOW ANY FRATERNITY MEN? BS! Have the men you know (including your brother) who are members of the chapters at UConn write you letters of recommendation or something.
Fifth: I quite literally hate your last line. Don't try to "fit", be yourself. If it works, it works. Don't change yourself just so you can say you are greek.

You can't know this unless you went through each and every fraternity's pledge classes and counted races. Did you ever think that a lot of Asians just don't go through recruitment? So if only 2 go through recruitment and 1 get a bid, it's not going to look the same as if 500 white guys go through and 250 get a bid.
Go through recruitment with an open mind and confidence, don't worry about your looks or your race because the second you do, you've lost what you're really there for: to get to know the guys and to let them get to know you.

There aren't that many "major" universities in Connecticut. I wouldn't be concerned with ethnicity nearly as much as being yourself, making eye contact, being pleasant, etc. good luck!

Could be. There are a few others. However, he shouldn't have an issue based on being asian at any of them.

I'll go out on a limb and say he shouldn't have an issue being Asian at the majority of schools in the Northeast. If there aren't more Asians in IFC fraternities there, it's because they either don't rush at all or rush the historically Asian fraternities. At some fraternities, yes, but at some fraternities you can't get in unless you drive a Beemer. That doesn't mean all the chapters are like that.

I went to a northeast school. My chapter was actually called Asians Only by one of the other Psi U chapters as a play on our chapter name and the fact that the majority of our membership was Asian.
