Talking csulb rushing as a junior

Hi all I go to Cal state long beach and am planning as rushing as a junior. I think it's feasible, because it doesn't sound extremely competitive but I still want to stand out. All the girls seem super sweet and I'd love to join. I have good grades (3.6) and am involved in extracurriculars (one of the reasons I didn't rush before was because I didn't think I would have time). Is their anything that I should expect out of rush here & being a junior? Will they ask why i didn't rush earlier? Is anyone familiar with my school?

Thanks so much!

It's not unusual for juniors or nursing majors to participate in recruitment at CSULB. There are probably a lot of women you will recognize as pre-nursing or nursing majors in the chapters.

Have fun and good luck to you! CSULB has 7 great NPC chapters and turns out some of the best nurses anywhere!

I hope you'll be writing a recruitment story! I have friends who go to CSULB and are Greek so it would be fun to read a rush story that is so close to home

Hi surfgirl!

I rushed at CSULB as a junior and received a bid. That was back in the late 90s and things have changed... but I know that it's possible.

Good luck and Go Beach!

I too rushed as a Junior & received a bid to Sigma Kappa. It is not unusual for juniors to receive bids at Long Beach.

Have fun! I'm not helping them out this year but many of my friends are. Good-luck!

I am a junior in college and will rush for a sorority come 3 weeks. However, I if I do recieve a bid for a sorority, I have a jaw surgery (I have TMJ and there is constant jaw pain) scheduled for late March of this term. It will occur during spring break and I will be swollen for a month and have to spend alot of time recovering.

So Im wondering, Should I tell my sororitys that I rushing for that I will not be able to contribute much for a month after my surgery? OR should I tell them I get in so they will understand that I simply can't contribute much of my time? If so, won't they gossip about me and maybe make up stories about me, saying I've gotten plastic surgery, etc etc,

I've seen how catty and oftentimes downright malicious sororities are and I'm really afraid.. : (

If I tell them before I rush, won't that mean that they will be less likely to accept me?

Also, in soroties, how much time per week/month is spent in them? Do many people drop out after a semester or so?

I basically need to duck out of many social commitments for about three weeks-a month after my surgery as I will have my jaw wired and I'll be on a liquid diet. I will also be as swollen as a water ballon. How will most sororities handle a girl like that?

THanks so much!

1. Sororities are nothing like the way they're portrayed on TV, so please get that out of your head. I doubt anyone would take the time to make up a rumor about a NM that they barely know.

2. The time commitment varies from chapter to chapter, but you can expect to have a weekly chapter meeting, new member meetings, social events, and philanthropy events to participate in.

In any chapter, there are a few women who drop out for various reasons. But genberally speaking, most women don't quit.

3. We can't tell you if a chapter is going to cut you or not based on your condition. I CAN tell you that during recruitment, chapters want to get to know YOU. If you make it all about your jaw conditions and such, then they aren't getting to know you. They're just hearing about your medical issues.

I wouldn't tell them about it. It's a medical thing, and as such is generally something you'd be excused from chapter and other events for. It's not really something that would come up during recruitment unless your conversation has gone somewhere strange.

It's not that you're hiding it, it's just not important to talk about at the time.

If you were in my chapter you'd probably get cards and flowers and people helping you keep up with your school work. And that's what you're looking for in recruitment, sisters who're there for you because that's what you DO for sisters.

i agree. after you get a bid and have a couple of new member meetings you might mention to your new member coordinator(the officer who is in charge of the new member training)that you will be having surgery in late march-that will give her time to adapt her training for your needs. good luck with your surgery and with recruitment!
