Advertising Recruitment on Facebook

My chapter is holding Informal Recruitment this upcoming spring semester. I saw that you can place Ads on Facebook that target to a particular group of people. What do you think about the idea of advertising on Facebook through the ads on the side?

I feel like people on GC will say that it looks desperate (I agree) and that informal recruitment should be a time where your chapter shines as individual recruiters of people you already have some sort of connection to, no matter how vague.

I don't know what the correct answer is, but I know that I ignore facebook ads by and large (I tune them out?) so I can't imagine that it would work even if it didn't look desperate.

I would say no for the reasons above. Besides, you don't want every random girl, but girls who resemble or will enhance your chapter. Have the women make a list of every outstanding woman that know on campus that is unaffiliated. Then invite them to (and welcome them to bring a friend along-many girls hate to attend things alone and this will bring in more similar type girls) to an event that is all about recruitment for your chapter, but does not in anyway seem about recruitment for the women in attendance.

I wouldn't make a facebook ad, but maybe an event page? That's what chapters do at my school, and it's how I found out about informal recruitment events. Then you can have girls invite people that they know, but it'll also be visible to other people.

Ahh, Facebook as the high tech chalking. No ads, no event pages, no groups anyone can join. No, no, no.

I agree w/ BabyPink's suggestion - get your sisters to make a list of who they want to invite and then send a closed, private FB invitation to those girls and tell them if they want to bring a friend or two that they can. Don't let it be for all to see or "all" will assume they're welcome.

You'd be surpised. I know one of our chapters for their recolonization effort put up facebook ads and got 8 strong people to show for pinning.

I think it really depends on the campus culture. If Greek life isn't a huge thing at your school, Facebook can be a good advertising tool. I think an event page is a better idea than the ads are. Some schools don't have a great organized office of Greek life where potential members can get information about informal recruitment events. I agree that it can look tacky if it is done the wrong way.

Whenever my chapter did informal recruitment, we said that each sister had to invite # of people (one or two, usually) to the event. You could have sisters do that on a Facebook event, cause it seems like everyone has FB.

It probably couldn't hurt.

You don't have to take everyone who inquires.

As far as at a IFC/Panhellenic level, I think this is a no-brainer as long as it's not cost-prohibitive.

Men have less trouble than women telling someone to get lost if they're not suitable.
