Fraternities shrinking in size
A very disturbing trend has been occurring with fraternities. Almost without exception fraternities are closing far more chapters than they are opening. Even worse, chapters are being closed at flagship institutions while the new ones seem to be at much smaller and less prestigious schools. This has happened during a GOOD economy.
I fear for what will happen during the next twelve months as the results of the severe economic downtourn effects the Greeks. I suspect that some of the smallest national organizations are going to face the same financial crisis they had during the 1970s -- which caused the demise of a few of them.
Sororoties appear to have had a good period of growth; however, I suspect that they too will feel the pinch during the next several mmonths and lose some chapters.
