We weren't actually named after the animal, we were named (I don't remember the exact story, so forgive me) after the miners who originally settled in southern Wisconsin -- they found that the best homes were dugouts in the hills, and soon after that people started referring to them as "badgers."
Here's a little bit of Bucky Badger history for you:

Other Big Ten mascots:
Does anybody know exactly what a Nittany Lion is?
When I was little, I accidentally referred to Purdue's mascot as "the Waterheaters" instead of "the Boilermakers."
In high school our mascot was "the purgolder" . . . I still don't know what that is. I can top that, though -- a nearby high school's athletic teams were known as "the goslings," i.e., the baby geese. Intimidating! But best of all was my middle school mascot. I went to Georgia O'Keeffe Middle School -- our mascot was "the Fighting Iris." You know, like the Notre Dame mascot, only Georgia O'Keeffe was famous for painting flowers, so . . .? Super-lame . . . but funny.

Are you talking about Watertown with the Goslings? GPBoy went to school there and I tease him for it all the time! My college mascot is a Pioneer, only there is no actualy costumed mascot, just a big blue and orange P. Yippee. Next year, however, I will be a Golden Eagle when I transfer.

My college mascot is a donkey with a stick of dynamite in it's mouth, named Blaster. We made a golden colored idol of him for our homecoming float two years ago and simply referred to it as the Brass Ass.

They changed my college mascot since I was there so I won't get into that one.
My private school's mascot is the griffin. It would have been nice to have a mascot that you could see at a zoo.

We are the dayton flyers but our mascot is Rudy....it is a cross between super man and the red barren. He has a really big head and chin. It's a little creppy if you as me. I don't know what they were thinking...

Yeah, Watertown is the Goslings! I ran cross-country and track in high school, and we'd always have at least a couple meets at Watertown -- and every single time we'd make fun of the mascot. Not that ours was much better, but still . . . who'd be scared of the Goslings?

I remember reading a while back about a school who had to change their mascot.....they were the Devil's Lake Satans. Now how's that for an intimidating school mascot?

Aah that's so awesome - where did you go? We could have ran against each other - we had a lot of meets with Waterhole as well!
GP Boy is angry we are making fun of his beloved Goslings again.

Richard Stockton College- Ospreys
An Osprey is a large fish eating hawk...it was endangered when the school was founded in the 1970's...thats what you get when the school is founded by hippies.
