They might not have the cultural southern significance as Birmingham or Atlanta but whenever I've traveled to any of those cities, I feel like I've stepped into South Georgia or Alabama.

IowaStatePhiPsi- I haven't heard about the restaurant you are referring to. Where was it located?

Look, Florida is different. You don't have people south of Orlando talking like they're from Alabama, Mississippi or Georgia. We don't sound like white trash. And if you're thinking of places in the panhandle, thats not even really Florida. We just decided to call it Florida where the nice beaches stop, which is the Alabama state line.

And Iowa, you're calling Iowa northern? Thats thats straight up mid-west. Obviously you havent been here for any length of time to be able to tell the difference to understand what I'm talking about. Thats why I didnt list those cities.

I don't know if you'd really say Gainesville feels like Alabama or South-Georgia when you go there. 3/5 of the town are students, and over 1/2 of those are from cities from Orlando on down to Key West.

The college area of Gainesville isn't southern but if you step a few miles out of the UF radius, it's all cow pastures and barns. My roommate freshman year was from Hawthorne. She told me stories of her chickens, cows and horses that were on her farm and how her best friend got run over by a tractor.

My suitemates and I were South Florida girls. We corrupted her. heh heh

For those of you who argue that FL is Southern - go live somewhere else in the South for a while, like NC or GA or AL, and then tell me what you think. I will concede that there are parts of FL that are Southern-like (such as the area outside of Gville as ZTAngel mentioned, and St. Auggie, and down 321 through Ocala, and of course, the redneck riviera, er, the panhandle

), but they are not Southern the way Charleston, Savannah, ATL, etc. are.

For college, I went North, but actually went further South. They sure do love to ridicule me for being from FL. My favorite FL joke is being told that my home state needs to break off and float back up to New York where it belongs.

ETA: IowaStatePhiPsi - I haven't heard of that restaurant either. Do you have a link or remember where it was located?

lol....well, "outside" of the Gainesville/UF area.....thats called Alachua. And yes, thats country/southern as fuck. I got lost out there one time and my cell phone didnt work. There was no reception being as there were no towers in the area.

But I will give north florida this, it is some of the most beautiful land Ive ever seen. Have you ever been to something like the Itchetutnee (sp?) river basin? Its a spring-fed river that goes on and on forever. Its like being in a different world. I was floating down it once and I swear I felt like I was floating down some perfect paradise.

And yea, South Florida girls corrupt anything they come across.

All the states I listed as North and Northeast were Union states.
I listed Kentucky and Missouri as South even though they were part of the North because those two (along with Maryland and Delaware) had slaves.
