Re: Other colors of CoAs
I don't know why I didn't think of this earlier - I must have been distracted by rampant lions - but technically Delta Chi's Coat of Arms uses red and gold (gules and or) when our colors are red and buff. Gold is used as a correct heraldic tincture in place of buff. I think the use of gold in the CoA is one of the reasons you see almost no use of true buff in Delta Chi today. The difference is slight, but buff is more beige than gold ( see here).

*bump*
two interesting items in http://www.greekchat.com/gcforums/sh...08384&page=180
that belong in this thread; sorry I don't know how to make the link "cool" and have it say something like "here".
And yes I'm talking about one thread in another thread. Oh well.

Hmmm.... no Alpha Delta Pi yet? I'll start with the crest (I've never heard it referred to as a coat of arms, always a crest):
The lion on top is the same lion as on our New Member pin:
Also on the New Member pin are the letters of our open motto in Greek: "We Live For Each Other".
Our pin (not a badge), for comparison (this is the latest pin style):
There are elements on the crest which are on our pin:
-Clasped Hands
-Two Stars
-Stylized Diamond around the candle (candle not on the pin)
During the short period when we were Alpha Delta Phi, our mascot was the dragon, and this is one of the charters with the crest showing the dragon & Alpha Delta Phi at the top. It's Delta/University of Texas Chapter, our longest in continued existance. Note that the candle replaced the Greek Letters on the future crest:
At Convention, there is a parade of Chapter Flags. They are White with Azure Blue lettering:
And this is the logo for our Foundation:

Tau Delta Theta at Ole Miss from 1900 yearbook. They were founded in 1895 at Ole Miss I believe.
They later became a chapter of Tri Delta (Chi Chapter) in 1904. I had posted this already in another thread but thought it was appropriate here too. I have the original at work if you want to see it bigger I can repost it tomorrow. I can also post their badge in another thread.

but the one I posted still pops up fairly regularly. Probably because it is so similar to the colony pin.
Interesting to note- on a few documents, rather than the rose, the AOII monogram is used (where most fraternities & sororities use their crest/bearings). However the monogram can only be used on those specific things. The charter and the member certificate are the two that come to mind.

We also have on our member certificate the "seal" which is a Sheaf of Wheat with Alpha Omicron Pi on it. I don't have a picture but I'll see if I can take one and post it. Our Foundation has a logo that is similar to a seal, it looks like this:
Then a chapter I work with as a Network Specialist has this lovely piece of history. It is an old seal on a plaque.
This chapter was founded in the 1920s and so therefore the rule about the monogram of our letters only being on certain items probably came after this plaque was made. So this chapter can have this plaque displayed in a display case but obviously it is not a common item. So there are probably a handful of these plaques. I thought it was really neat when I was visiting them so I had to take a picture! It is very heavy!

A bump is needed.
Here are a few pictures I found online of the Panhellenic Room in the Lavere Memorial Temple -- SAE's headquarters in Evanston, Illinois. The Panhellenic Room is in the crypt (basement). The ceiling was painted over the course of 3 years and includes the coats of arms of 59 fraternities and sororities. (Thanks to Jake and Tobi, whoever they are, for posting these on their blog.)
Another great (and copyrighted) picture of the room can be found at Flickr here.
The temple also includes a magnificent chapel with Tiffany stained glass windows. Another room (the museum, I think) has stained glass windows with the seals/arms of every school with an SAE chapter. (Not sure how current it is.)

HOLY COW. This is awesome.
I immediately recognized the Alpha Xi COA, thanks to this thread. Didn't ever think I'd want to go to Indiana, but now it's on the list of must-visit places for my Greekdom tour. AZ-Alpha Xi and I are going to be all over the US, it appears.
Thanks for the bump! I'm still searching for information about the history behind the Kappa Alpha Theta COA so I can post it here.

Only thing similar to that that I've seen is the fountain at Biedenharn Gardens...too bad it doesn't work They need to have that plaque restored. It's a nice piece of history!

Since people are posting about Convention insignia and things:

These are our shields. Each chapter (collegiate and alumnae chapters) has a shield with their designation and founding year.
During the opening ceremonies of Covention, each chapter's delegate is escorted (one by one) into the room carrying their chapter's shield. They then are escorted to the podium, where they introduce themselves and say what chapter they represent. Then they walk over to the wall, hang the shield up for display, and take their seat.
Fun fact: Each person who carries the shield, signs the back of it with their name and the year. So you can look on the back of them and see who carried the shield of your chapter before you (they go WAY back).
These are a big deal. It's tradition for everyone who is at Convention from a chapter to take a group pic with their shield (ex: all the Alpha Betas in attendance take a pic with the AB shield).

That's really neat! Do your alumnae chapters use Greek letter designations, too? Ours don't, but I know that some orgs do.
(I'm from the Eta Mu chapter at UCSC, and the San Jose Alumnae Association which has no Greek letters!)
