Abusive mom: 'The girl' was the problem

DALLAS — A woman who locked her daughter in a filthy closet without food or water says she was trying to forget the girl existed.
Barbara Atkinson, sentenced in January to life in prison for abusing her daughter, said the girl was the source of all her problems.
During an interview this week at Dallas County Jail, Atkinson often referred to her daughter as "it" or "the girl," but never by name.
"It was the problem. It was what was causing everything," Atkinson was quoted in Thursday's editions of the Dallas Morning News. "Out of sight, out of mind. I shut it away and don't think of it. ... I couldn't stop her being in the closet."
The girl, now 9, was rescued more than a year ago. She was adopted in July by a Van Zandt County couple who tried to adopt her at birth but was forced to return the child because of a technicality.
Atkinson is being held in Dallas County until she testifies against the girl's stepfather, Kenneth Ray Atkinson, 34. He is to be tried this month on charges of sexually abusing and causing serious bodily injury to the girl.
She is not being identified by name because of the allegation of sexual abuse.
The mother, Barbara Atkinson, 31, gave several reasons for her abusive actions. She said a miscarriage six years ago sparked the abuse because she had trouble dealing with the loss. The girl also ate too much and caused problems in her marriage, she said.
Dr. Barbara Rila, a psychologist who worked with Barbara Atkinson's children, says sometimes abusive parents are so engrossed in their own pain that they fail to see their children as human beings. They don't have the skills to be a good parent, she said.
"Sometimes you almost feel like you're in the presence of evil, and other times you feel like you're with someone who just doesn't get it, and you feel pity for them," Rila said. "I think there is something basically human missing."
