It's not a Panhel sponsored event so if their HQ says it's OK for them to invite such people they can do so.
Okay, so because I signed a card on Pref Night saying I cannot rush for another year, going to any COB event would be "illegal," correct? Or is it that I can attend the events but will not be allowed to accept a bid until next fall rush? I'm not 100% clear on this and I have been invited to one such event, but I don't want to be going against Panhel's rules.

You can go if you want, you just can't be extended bid.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Legally she could attend COR. However, in my estimation that would be unethical. I would say if she is invited to a COR event, she should let the inviter know her situation and ask if they still want her to attend.

You cannot accept a bid for one calander year. I suppose you could go to the COB event, but you have to let those sisters know your situation.

The Panhellenic makes available to every chapter at A&M a list of girls who went through formal recruitment and it is clear which girls are available for COB or COR and which girls are not available to them because they signed a bid card. If you are invited to a COR event and you know you are not available, let them know. Someone in the chapter has slipped up or they want you for next Fall. I have a feeling it is the 1st reason.

Do chapters really match similar actives to pnms during recruitment? Is this only at small schools?

Not every girl at every party, but yes some chapters do match actives with PNMs who have similar interests or from the same hometown.

There is no hard and fast rule about matching pnms, but typically it is similar to hooking up two friends for a blind date: Kathy likes to ski, so you introduce her to a friend of yours who also likes to ski in hopes that they will hit it off.

ETA - My experience with matching is with large schools in the SEC.

They definitely try to match people they think could hit it off, or people they think can make a good conversation with a particular PNM. However, so many girls have the same resumes, it's difficult.

One of my rec girls this year had several great matches in the opening round. At those houses, it was clear the chapter made some definite choices in who would rush/bump her, and it made a difference in how she felt about the sorority. However, in the houses where there wasn't a great match, it wasn't necessarily the case that the chapter didn't care or didn't read the recs/application--it may be the case that the actives who were midwestern gymnasts in show choir were already spoken for!

Even back in the Jurrasic period, we tried to match up rushees with actives in some sort of systematic way--by hobby, hometown, daddy's club or major. Didn't always happen, but that was the ideal to strive for.

Not so much the size of the school but the size of the chapter. If you're at a school where the chapters are 50-60 women you can meet a good many of them during rush anyway so I don't see the point of "matching" people. This kind of thing is more important in huge chapters (100+) where meeting the person you have something in common with can be a crapshoot.

Most of our chapters have 35-45 returning women every fall (IIRC total is 55) and my chapter does make an effort to match. As a PNM I remember at least two others did, too. I think it's a good idea because barring the PNMs who list an activity they don't actually participate in any longer, it increases the chances of having a good conversation. It was helpful to me as a PNM to be paired with actives that could talk about things I was interested in and understood because otherwise I was fairly quiet. There are usually 90-115 PNMs so most actives will have a conversation with every one at some point during the week, but still. And it was extremely helpful to me as an active, too.

It's also very easy in a chapter that size to think up 3 sisters with the same interest as the PNM on the spot since all of the actives know enough about each other to know who loves sports, who is an English major, etc. So there's always the chance to create a match during the party.
