If you say so. Alpha Gam and KD are closer to the President's mansion than any other sorority house (being across the street from the Tridelt house), but there are/were buildings between them and it last time I looked ... or hiked through there. I don't know what's been torn down or what/who has moved. Give me a break. I'm a professor at Ole Miss, so I'm not intimately acquainted with the Alabama campus. I have one daughter at school there and know how to zero in on her.

Yes, they are closest to the President's mansion but Rose Admin and some of those dorms are in between. I did go to school there, lived in the sorority house and park near/walk through that area during football season....
The new lots will make that whole area sorority houses with nothing else facing that street - cul de sac between KD and Alpha Gam....

This is a section of the story about the new houses:
"Four new sorority houses are planned for construction beginning Fall 2011, according to McCreary. Sororities already on campus will have the first bids for the new houses, and new sororities wanting to be established on campus would then bid for the vacated houses.
The new houses will be built behind the President’s Mansion where Wilson, Byrd, Parker-Adams and New Hall are currently located. The demolition of those buildings was approved by the board of trustees in June.
“There are criteria for the new houses,” McCreary said. “Academic performance, demonstrated need and financial ability.”
Interested sororities will have the opportunity to apply for the new housing lots in October."
Hopefully this will help sororities who have out grown their houses and give an opportunity for others to colonize.

This may explain why Tridelt did not renovate their house as announced when my older daughter pledged back in 2006. Hmmm ...

Yes - here they go! My daughter is very excited to be on the other side of the door for the first time. I so emphatize with all you moms whose daughters begin rush at Bama today. Just saw the heat index will be 108 - 109. Hope they drink lots of water and have those hand held fans. It is so exciting, unlike any other experience in the world. Keep us posted how your girls are doing.

Man, I would be willing to pay A LOT of money to see my youngest daughter singing door songs today! Pricelessly incongruent for someone who once spent a week wearing dalmation pajamas and cowboy boots!

Okay, and "Preference Day" you fill out a card with what sorority you'd like to be in... then you have "Bid Day" and you receive an invitation from the sorority that selected you... What if the sorority that sent you an invitation was not the sorority you selected on "Preference Day"? Or do I have it all wrong? I'm just a little confused about that. :P

Should you make it to Preference DAy, you will be invited to attend the Pref parties of 3 chapters who have invited you back based on previous days.
You attend them, then you rank them in order of which you would most prefer to receive a bid from.
At the same time, chapters rank PNMs who attended their parties.
You submit your rankings, the chapters submit their lists, and a computer program matches you with one of the 3 chapters you ranked for Pref.
Ex: if you are invited to ABC, DEF, and XYZ for Pref, you will submit a final ranking depending on how you feel about each chapter after Pref.
So you might rank:
1. ABC
2. DEF
3. XYZ
Then these chapter submit lists of PNMs.
The computer takes your first choice and tries to find you on their list. If it reaches your name before ABC hits quota (and cannot take anymore girls) then you get a bid to ABC.
However, if ABC is full before the comp gets to your name, you were too low on their list. It then moves on and tries to place you with DEF.
If the comp reaches your name on DEF's list before they reach quota, you get a bid to DEF.

Ok - my daughter is through 7 of 10 first round parties for today. She just texted to say she had found a ride to Walmart to get a personal fan and other items on the suggested list. She also said there is plenty of water in between parties.
She has 5 more houses tomorrow for first round parties, so there are 15 sororities participating in formal recruitment. And 1642 girls going through!
I'd love to be a fly on the wall to see all that exuberant youthfulness on display!
Thanks everyone for participating - it does me good to come here and discuss all this stuff and not get her wrapped up in any of my concerns. I need to stay calm for her - it's crazy enough there!
Looking forward to our conversation tonight!
Thanks everyone for all the support & conversation!
Nancy

You haven't seen exuberance yet ... just wait until Squeal Day! And it won't be just youthful exuberance!
Best of luck to your little sweetie!

My daughter just skyped me & she looked absolutely beat! She finished her first round of 8 parties today, so she has 7 parties tomorrow. She said she was sooo tired but she thought today went well! I told her to stay cool & calm tomorrow & she would do fine. She did say she felt like she had good conversations in all the houses she visited today. One thing she did tell me that concerned me & her as well -- she said the girls in her Sigma Rho Chi group kept talking about they were going to do this & that on bid day & what sorority they were going to be in, etc. She said she thought, "How do you even know you are going to get a bid?" She is going into this with an open mind but knows with 1642 girls there is the possiblity she may not receive a bid.

Then your daughter is a smart cookie. Good luck to her! I've got a few friends/family members that are both actives and PNM's this year and I'm waiting on pins and needles to see how it turns out on both sides.

my daughter is keeping an open mind too. i told her she was not under any obligation to pledge my chapter (of course it would nice of her to wear my pin ) i'm sure the rho chis did what they could to discourage "suiciding". she understands that there is a possibility of no bid at all so why would you drop your chances by picking just one? she is so excited for the next round

i'm not sure how much exuberance there was. it sounded like everyone was wilting. there was a feeling that the lunch break did everyone in going to the afternoon session and a few girls passed out. i pray for a break in the heat so the girls can enjoy themselves. i'm sure they will forget about the heat on bid day!
