"Good people to follow" is fairly subjective. For me I follow basically two types: those in my field, and locals. A sprinkling of newsy types and geeky celebs.
I've been on Twitter a while. It's been good at expanding work connections. I even just had a new coworker spend a couple nights at my place while she waits for her apartment to be ready. I met this woman on Twitter via another user that (at the time) I didn't know IRL.
As for it being like Facebook; I know everyone on my Facebook page. I know a fraction of the people I follow/am followed by on Twitter. In fact those I know IRL tend to use it the least. My audience is different for both which is one reason I choose not to feed my tweets to FB.
Anyone attend tweetups or twestivals in your towns? I've been going regularly since February though I feel like the odd one out since most others attending are geeky guys (ok, I'm geeky, but not like that).

I'm obsessed with Twitter. It's the best marketing/networking tool I've ever come across (and yes MooseGirl, I go to Tweetups). I'm at @SecndCitySoiree - most of my Tweets are about food, party planning, and the like.

You know what's scary...
I just installed the Tweetie 2 app and one of the features it has is to allow you to find nearby twitterers...OMG within a 15 block radius there are at least 30 people twittering...hehe
Twitter voyeurism...hmmmm

I hate being out of the loop on new things. So....I finally caved and opened a Twitter account. I'm finding it a little strange but intriguing.
Could someone tell me what RT means when you see it right before someone's tweet?

RT means "ReTweet" - it's a way of repeating what someone else said, and giving them credit.
Remember, Twitter is just a big cocktail party. The point is to engage with others.

two points i want to share:
1. my frustration of searching for tweets from "everyone near me" and getting the most ridiculous, uneducated, asinine tweets. ugh.
2. according to a Pew study, Black women making less than 30K as recent grads are top tweeters: http://www.theroot.com/buzz/pew-stud...as-top-twitter
i didn't know i had the potential to be a top user of any social networking site, especially since most of my tweets are RTs and replies....
oh wait, am i feeding the "black women always have something to say about something" stereotype though Twitter? OH NOES!!!!1!
all of that to say, follow me! http://www.twitter.com/tld221

I'm going to do that because I don't think it's a bad thing to have something to say about everything.
OK - my twitter is wonky so I can't follow you now. Later.

tld221, when you say "everyone near me" do you mean geographically or metaphorically (i.e. the people you're close with)? If it's the former, have you tried browsing wefollow.com? They list people on Twitter based on various categories, including location.

I'm guess geographically - I think Twitter gives a list of tweets based on where youre located. so i get folks who are probably standing in front of the building, or the corner store, or what have you. and their average age is probably 16, which means their usernames and posts are fodder for the "bad grammar" thread.
i'll try wefollow.com. i only am followng a few former co-workers-turned friends and random celebrities (and theyre not celebrities, its like news outlets and authors).
