LXA Tried to pass an Amendment about smoking in Houses at The last General Assembly. It went down to a resounding Defete.
Isnt there enough Moneritying of Morality in Greeks?
Please, if it is Not Illegal, give it a rest.
People either Smoke and drink or they doint. When do We as Greek National Organizations begin to stop trying to say Oh No, You cannnot do this?
Both Tobacco and Alcohal are Legal Products. Oh, they are two of the highest TAXED Commodities in the USA!

I think it's nice when girls go out of their way to cover their letters when they're smoking or drinking out of respect. Or around the corner, out back, etc.
I like that their letters are important enough to them that it's an effort they make.
You know, I think it's okay to be respectful. I swear sometimes, but I don't do it in front of my parents. I get drunk sometimes, but I make sure not to when I go out with people from work. I don't think being respectful = being hypocritical.

You aren't from a small town/college, are you?
No matter what you do, it is going to reflect on you, and you can't divide your life into layers like that. I could say "I'm not going to drink around my coworkers" and run into one of them in a bar when I'm smashed. The whole point people are trying to make is if you think something is that wrong, you shouldn't do it at all. If you think getting drunk is so bad that it would have repercussions at your job, YOU SHOULDN'T DO IT AT ALL.
I'm sorry, but this must be a stupid Southern thing, and I'm really glad no one ever tried to shove it down my throat.

I'm not sure it's a "stupid Southern thing" or not. In my chapter, we are not supposed to drink, smoke, or cuss in our letters. We also don't cuss in our chapter room. However, it's not something for which you'd get sent to Standards, just kind of a guideline that everyone follows. I only smoke when I drink, so I have never personally had a problem with it.
If I saw someone else smoking in their letters, I would be surprised but I probably wouldn't think, "Oh, how tacky."
I think situations like OTW's are ridiculous- masking tape, etc.? Not necessary. I'm not against the rule but I don't think it should be exaggerated to the point where it becomes a main focus. If girls smoking in letters are your biggest standards issue, hats off to you.

I think that smoking in your letters as well as drinking is disrespectful because you got to think about what people are thinking about hat wants to join your sorority and they are looking at you drinking abd smoking they might think thats all that your about. i drink and i smoke but i wont do it in my letters and for the simple fact that you got to think about what your founders have down to get the organization started and your disrespecting them by wearing your lettersa nat carrying. well thats my personal opinion

I don't see ANY problem with smoking or drinking in your letters. People smoke and people drink. If you don't like it, turn your head or leave. Greek organizations accept a wide variety of people. You've got to take the good with the "bad". If you think smoking or drinking in letters is SOOO disrespectful why did you allow that person in your org?

If somebody is so stupid that she thinks someone enjoying a beer is all and only about drinking, who would want her as a member?

Ok, seriously. I think that whole "What would our founders think" arguement is some of the biggest bs there is right now.
Take the founders of ADPi..... All of them around 15 yrs. old..... In the middle of the 1800s..... And almost all of them the daughters of ministers..... I would imagine I do something every single day that would shock them, and most of my sisters out there probably do too. They would probably be shocked by ANY drinking, or fraternization with men (they went to an all women's school after all), any kind of foul language, and even (gasp) the fact that I didn't go to church yesterday!
I'm not trying to sound like a witch here, but seriously.... Don't we all do things that would probably have our founders rolling over in their graves? It's a different day and age, and I kinda think that is a dumb arguement.
End of rant./

Very well stated.
And, I'd disagree with 33girl's comment - I've got no problem "dividing [my] life into layers like that." There are lots of things I don't do at work that I do when I'm with my friends - that's being professional. There are lots of things I don't do with my friends that I do when I'm at work - that's being a good friend.
There's a lot of layers to me, and a lot of layers to my life. Sometimes I like to be crazy. Sometimes I like to be serious. It's hard to be both at once, so I'm each at different times. I'm not ashamed of either, but they fit in different areas of my life.
I think part of growing up is figuring out how to incorporate yourself in an appropriate way into different aspects of your life, while still being true to what you're all about.
I see the main theory - that if you're ashamed of something, don't do it. But I don't think we're talking about things these women are ashamed of. I think we're talking about showing respect. My parents are aware I have sex, but that doesn't mean I throw my boyfriend down on the dinner table when we go over for Sunday dinner. It wouldn't be appropriate or respectful.

Though, in the end we can go round-and-round about this --
They're your letters. Your org. thought you were a quality enough girl to wear them, so you should be able to decide what to do with them.
Just don't tell me what to do in mine.

It was encouraged that when ever we were in our letters we represented our house they way we wanted to be seen......so drinking/smoking was something we just did not do....
However....one of my favorite memories was Etta Beta night when we all went to the bars in our letters because that was tradition....

What do you think your founders would say about your spelling and grammar? I think they would beat you with a big iron pot.
