This is probably an abnormal thing to do, but I'm really paranoid of being robbed or burglarized.

I don't keep my real jewelry, my badges, and my sentimental pieces in a regular jewelry box on top of a dresser or vanity.

I keep those in a jewelry roll-up bag or box (for earrings & rings) and have it hidden in my apartment. While it is still possible for thieves to find it, it's not as obvious so if they are in a hurry the chances that they find it are slimmer.

That's not so abnormal. Mine is kept in a similar way. Everyday (Cheap) stuff is in my jewellry box. THe good stuff that I don't wear much is hidden ina roll thing my mom got me years ago. She keeps hers the same way.

I like the "hide in plain sight rule". In the late 1990s, I got robbed. My sorority pins were on a felt board on top of dresser near jewelry box. They were still there when I got home. First clue to the police, theif did not go to college. They must have thought I was a snob but turns out I was right. Crackhead Bob was a High School drop out looking for drug $ (he worked for daddy's architecture business and walked the neighborhood at lunchtime looking for drug $). . He got caught selling my stuff at a jewelry store. Too bad for me that daddy kept him out of jail. Long story short, I got back my other gold jewelry six months later after the case was closed.
