how about massive babbling to members, not having anything good to say and potentially making a fool of yourself to members? talk about a scary experience!
nothing big, but the at informational i went to recently, a girl (who was sitting next to me) was wearing a white shirt and red pants. everyone looked at her, it was like a record stopped. i discreetly told her she shouldnt have worn that, and she says "i didnt know...i just came from work, and this is what i wore today."

BS is what i say. if you are that interested, you would know the "taboos" (or at least try). and then the girl was sitting next to me, so the members thought she came with me! the interested girl was so embarassed, she didnt get up not once the whole time and sat with her jacket over her lap.

another girl wore a pearls, claiming innocence, that she wore the "on a regular basis." the next time i saw her that night, the pearls were not on her neck anymore.

I'm not sure how embarassing this was for the women involved but we had the standard strange questions at our rush and just some what was ya thinking moments.
 1) My chapter covers outlying cities in about a sixty mile radius and most folks didn't know that till the rush but we had women that traveled from another city with an ACTIVE chapter to attempt to submit there.

 2) At least two people wanted to know, apparently weren't listening to each other, how soon they needed to have their money together to give to the chapter. They got the standard, 24 hours after we call you response.

 3) This isn't to knock anyone as my chapter hadn't had rush since 1999 but if you look about five minutes away from delivering your child you may want to stay home.

LMAO at some of these stories. And why come do some folx wear pink and green to a DST event or crimson and cream to an AKA (or any other GLO) event?

It makes you wanna ask "what the hayle are they thinking?"

One lady wanted to sell Mary Kay and told us about her intentions to be more active in the grad chapter (she was also in her 40's)

 | Soror, you have to be kidding me!
Sweat suits? Mary Kay sales? Also Known As?

I think that I'm most upset at the Mary Kay lady. I would hope that at least a 40 year old would know better than that!

If a young woman doesn't know about attire, etc., I would hope that her parents would have taught her to take the time to ask about matters that you are unclear about - especially if the matter is important to you. I don't understand not asking if one is unsure - even if one has to ask her girlfriends, cousins, whomever. To me, if it is important enough to her, she will at least figure out if a Rush requires more "interview" attire or more "come as you are" attire.

 | We have had a few like that.

One one line, one delivered the week before initiation, did her little one day stay in the hospital and kept going. She is still very active and is the treasurer of our chapter. On the other hand, her line sister delivered the day of initiation, we held a special one for her after she came home and we haven't seen her since.

On our last line we had a prospect who delivered the week after initiation and she now our social action chair.

So I say that to say, while they all looked ready to deliver at the Rush, they made it through and if we had of held it against them we would have missed out on at least two good workers.

		| Originally posted by sigmadiva Yes, good point. But, to further the 'flame', the White lady may not be aware of the issues of AA women because she did not grow up with that experience so she can not address the question. For example, I do have Choctaw Indian in my bloodline but I was not raised as an American Indian. So, while I can be sympathetic to what is happening to American Indians I can not 'feel' their issues because I was not raised that way.

I am not suggesting that because a non-Black is interested in our (NPHC) orgs we need to totally adjust our respective programs, but we may need to be more aware that they have an interest; and their background will be different from many of ours.

Maybe, for whatever reason, the White lady wants to become more aware and involved with the issues of AA women and Delta piqued her interest. Or maybe she just saw women who are out there trying to help other women. I've never really seen the type of women-support efforts among NPC orgs as there are among NPHC sororities.
 | Sigmadiva,
I understand what you are saying but I just don't agree. She should have known that she was coming to a Rush for a BGLO. If a woman comes to a Rush for a BGLO, I think that she should know something about the organization and the plight of African-American women over time, which has shaped the organization. Our organizations are not solely shaped by the women's movement *in general*. Our experiences include the *unique* experiences and shaping from African-American women.

I don't buy the argument that she may have been there to learn and therefore we need to cut her some slack. As African-Americans, we always have to compete *on level* with all other races for anything that we want - we have to be on point (or BETTER in most cases). Likewise, IMO she should have to be on point when it comes to participating in BGLO affairs.

 | I understand and agree but you know sometimes all we get is that first impression. And folks were murmuring during the rush about the few pregnant women there. Mainly about their ability to sacrifice that money and time. I'm not sure if they were granted interviews or if they applied really but I'm thinking it could have been a liability for them if they had.

Our undergrad chapter had a rush not long ago. I'm sorry but I was not impressed- AT ALL. There were of course, girls in red, girls who looked like they just rolled out of bed, a girl with flip-flops on, etc. I couldn't believe it. The one that took the cake was this girl who had on a see-through shirt! Many of the older graduate sorors were there and we were just all embarassed for her. I was like "what would possess you to go there?". I really want to pull some of the ladies to the side just to "talk" to them, I just really wanted to ask them if they realized how utterly disrespectful they were being. The dumbest question, by far, was this one:

"Um, so, like, what do y'all talk about at your chapter meetings? What do you y'all do?"

I just wanted to reschedule the rush for another day. That did it for me.
