Just a quick question... I will be attending UA next Fall (2011) as a Sophomore. With that considered, if I were to be in a sorority would you suggest I stay in the dorm my first year or go ahead and live in the sorority house (if spots are available)?

UA freshmen are required to live in dorms. EDITED to add: So sorry, I skipped right over the sophomore part! I'd suggest a dorm, because you're right on campus where everything is happening and it's nice to meet other people that way.
Most sorority houses are full at that point, anyway. There MIGHT be an outside chance that you could move into a house, but I really, really doubt it.

Bid Day
My daughter is going through rush this year at Bama. We moved her in to Tutwiler yesterday!! She is so excited - as am I! I just wanted to post the info below regarding Bid Day lunches - my daughter received this in an email from UA Panhellenic:
Bid Day will be on Sunday, August 15th at 10:00 a.m. at Bryant Denny Stadium and Sorority Row. Bid Day is a family event, and sororities will host special meals for new members and their families. Due to space constrictions, however, only new members and their parents will be permitted inside the sorority houses on Bid Day. Please keep this in mind as you make your Bid Day plans.
Thanks & good luck to all the girls & Moms going through Rush this week!

Well, I guess that explains it pretty clearly. All I have to say here is, I sure hope they get the space constrictions worked out soon within the coming years so that at least all immediate family members can be let inside on Bid Day for a "family event." Sorry, but I just absolutely hate the idea of having even one good kid in a family of four unexpectedly finding out right at the house door while happily going in that he (or she) had to be apart from his/her family for even a few hours of one day if he/she was just there "as part of the family like always" for a "family event" if there was any other, better way at all to deal with this problem.
Again, best of luck to all in recruitment.

I think you should probably go through rush and get a bid before you think about moving into a sorority house. Even if you're going to be a sophomore, I don't believe the sororities allow the new members to move into the houses before they're initiated.
Are you going to a community college to save $ your freshman year or what?

The only house at Alabama I know anything about is the Tridelt house, since both of my girls were there last year. My oldest got to move in her junior year because she had an officer position. She lived there her senior year also. She graduated this past May.
Like her older sister, my younger daughter is renting a house off campus with four of her sorority sisters for her sophomore year. Time will tell if she gets to move into the house.
I do know that my neice (who graduated in May also), never lived in the ZTA house, but I have no information on why that may have been.

Daily Updates
For all you moms whose daughters are going through recruitment at Bama this week -- GOOD LUCK and TAKE a DEEP BREATH! Your daughters will be texting you each day after they get this schedules. (I know mine did last year every morning when she saw the list she would return to each day).I believe she got her list around 9:00 each morning so be expecting that text or call. They could return to a maximum of 11 for philanthropy day and 7 for skit then to the final 3 for pref. Hope this gives a little insight as I have not seen this info posted.

There are four pref parties. Do the PNMs just go to three?

Right now I'm at a small four-year university (it's a branch of the actual university). I wasn't sure what I wanted to major in so I never committed to a big university. However, I now know what major I'd like to pursue and that's why I am transferring to BAMA.

I did not video all of the sororities, but for those who have not attended Bid Day at Alabama, here is a clip as the Tri Delta's left Denny Stadium and ran to their house. One of the three girls carrying the letters is my older daughter. One of the new members is my youngest daughter.

As previously mentioned, the new members leave the stadium in alphabetical order of the name of their new house. Hopefully, your daughter will call you from inside the stadium so that you will know which group she will be coming out with.

lol ... well, as you know, that was not the important information I was trying to get across! The area that the new members run through is barracaded off, and they leave the stadium (no matter what its name is) in an orderly fashion led by letter-carrying sisters who take them to their new house. Their other new sisters will be waiting outside the house to welcome them. Once they get to the house, they will be given a jersey and a name tag.
