But sometimes it just hits the spot!
When I lived in Chile for three years, the only place I could get Kraft Mac&Cheese was from the American Embassy's commissary (yes, we could shop there). As much as I was craving it, I couldn't see spending $5 a box on it. When my mom came to visit, she brought me some in her suitcase.

No, it doesn't. Not ever!

I'm still recovering from my years as an Air Force brat - the blue box mac and cheese with Spam is PX friendly kinda meal. Blech!

The very first day I had home-ec, the teacher asked if anyone knew how to make Macaroni & cheese. A lot of us raised our hands, and then she said, "Without the box" and I was the only one with my hand still up. She asked, "so how do you do it?" I answered, "first you make a white sauce..." and the teacher was so shocked that I knew how to make a white sauce that I already had an A by the end of the day.
In answer to the poll: both, but mostly as a side.

Southern Living has fabulous mac & cheese recipes. I vote Main meal b/c that's how I grew up, that with a side salad and dinner was done.

This reminds me of our deep fried mac n' cheese nuggets (with fries!) that we serve at the bar I work at. It's a "pub and grille," but don't let that fool you. It's really just a bar that sells food.

If it's Kraft just say no. If it's Velveeta gimme more.
I vote main because when I have had it as a side it seemed strange.

Even my kids don't like the blue box one anymore. My daughter likes the Velveeta shells with broccoli. It took a while, but I have convinced her that there's not enough broccoli in there to count as a veggie.
