I share a lot of Ms. Coulter's views so of course I think she's witty, delightful and right on target. I am sure there are a lot of people who think the same about Michael Moore, though.
I guess clever is in the eye of the beholder.

That's true.
I think they're both idiots.
But actually, the truth is that all of these commentators on both sides are exceedingly clever. They've figured out how to turn they're political leanings into big bucks for themselves, by basically being obnoxious.
I wasn't kidding when I said I think they're devisive. I think they're bad for the country as a whole.
Too many people believe everything they hear from these guys because they have a name and a public forum.
Shouting down a guest, using propaganda techniques and having a mass media platform doesn't make any of them right.

Moore isn't really a commentator. Apples and Oranges here.
I wish Bill Buckley had his own show.

You're right. I didn't do that lumping.
Although Moore is making a social comment with his "documentaries."

if you make social commetary at all, in any mass medium, then you are a commetator.

I think both you and Rudey are right -- although Rudey is right at least in that they aren't really "apples and apples" given the difference in media.

What commentary does Moore provide? If you start to loosely define labels like that, then everyone in the media like Anna Nicole Smith is now a commentator.
Moore's job is to be a film maker. He's good at that because he has a style he created. He found out, early on, that you can take media clips, piece them together, and use it to tell a story. Whether or not, it's reality, doesn't matter. It can be about cars that fly or monkeys that swim. It's a great way to make a film.

Hes a commentator because of the style he uses to report the story. Kind of think of a contemporary political documentary program/movie as a more personal and longer version of a current-affairs tv segment. No matter what, theres always going to be an agenda and the journalist's own perspective is going to show through. Another example could be between a newspaper article and that of a text book, both on the same subject. A person's perspective is always going to show up in their work....

Using your definition, every single person in this world is a commentator.

I suppose considering the root of the word, "comment," everyone is a commentator. Pretty much everyone comments on something.
In the case of these two, and others who have been mentioned, though, they have a much bigger soapbox than the rest of us and have been given the semi-official status of "commentator."

I don't consider Danny Glover or Sean Penn commentators and most of the world would probably agree to that.
Stop splitting hairs. You're too old for this and right now I need to concentrate on how I can remove the egg sandwich stain from an important document.

I have no comment on that.
