Replying for Smurf- her adorable little (I am insane in the middle of the night).
We initiated 4 and have one new member pinned as of right now. Hopefully we'll get some more PNMs by the end of the semester.

thought I'd bump thread back up
HI There,
Thought I'd bump this thread back up since a new semester is coming up. We are the only NPC on campus so we kind of do an informal/formal recruitment. We do COB at all times and invite interested women and friends to our events but we also have a couple themed recruitment parties. Our MRC just emailed us a request for Party Theme ideas so I thought I'd hit everyone up on the Phi Sig Forum. We've done 80's night; Luau; Ice Cream Social 50's theme; Mardi Gras; red, white, and blue/USA Pride; and game night. Any help would be appreciated.
I just sent her two suggestions that I thought were really cute (realize that I'm on some medication treating a sinus infection so I'm a little out of it right now). Maybe tomorrow I'll be thinking what the heck was I thinking. Tell me what you think of these - good or oh my god what were you thinking by suggesting these:
A Nurses and Doctors theme (we could all have kids toy stethscopes, bandaids hanging out of pockets, Popsicles used as tongue depressors, borrow Kims crutches, etc). That could be a night we could do a philanthropy event and profile the National Kidney Foundation. Maybe have the information out about NKF, Kidney Disease and Organ Donation too. Do both a recruitment and philanthropy event at the same time.
What about something along the lines of "We'll be Blue Without You" and all sisters wear blue (clothes, eyeshadow, anybody daring to streak blue in hair, etc.) (maybe get Blue Phi Sig shirts) Build upon the theme of if they don't join Phi Sig we'll be blue without them. Maybe have our newest members wear gold (yellow) Phi Sig shirts showing how we become sunny and happy because of the sisterhood we share with our newest members. Makes it a play on our colors.
Okay guys were these good or "Carolyn stop taking your sinus medication it's made you wacko"
As you can see we need some suggestions for themed parties.
LITP,
Carolyn

No, I think those are very cute ideas. How many classes do you take each semester? How many girls did you get last semester?
One idea I've always wanted to try was around the world. You have a different "mocktail" in each room, whether it be bedroom or the living areas. This way, you get to spend more one on one time with the girls, its easier to hear and you have something to talk about.
I've always wanted to do a country theme. Everyone wears jeans and plaid shirts, you play country music, have someone teach a line dance for the activity, serve chips and salsa, etc. I think that would be soo cute!
I'll try to think of more for you!

Hey Jess-pom,
I liked the country idea so I passed that one on to our MRC. I liked the mocktail/around the world one too but we don't have a house and usually hold recruitment parties in the Student Union or in a class room so kind of hard to do that one.
We initiated 11 fantastic new sisters for Fall semester. They have all made such an amazing contribution to the sorority. It looks like we'll have some strong recruitment this coming spring semester too. We've already got some women that are interested and we're doing COB activities with to get to know them better. what about your chapter?
As a grad student two classes is full time, so this coming Spring I'm taking two classes, both stong quantitative Public Administration classes (yuck) not my strong point. Fall semester I took only 1 class as I needed a small break. The last two years being a founding sister trying to get the chapter going, being founding MOC, and then Archon last year all while being a grad student wiped me out (along with a lot of personal/family health drama and working 40 hours a week). Fall semester with 1 class and being the Alumnae Chair and Webmistress was a nice change of pace for me. Much more relaxed now, hope this means 2003 will be a good year for me.
LITP,
Carolyn
How many classes are you taking?

Chapter Rush
is our chapter the only chapter that doesn't do a skit? i just went through my second rush(the first rush i didn't join anything). i suggested that we needed a skit. they didn't want to do it even though it was written almost a week before rush and it was all one liners. so, we didn't do it. we ended up having spare time that we needed to fill.
the thing is most of the girls in my sorority have never seen a big rush and i happen to go through one(my rush group at VSU was like 40 girls). they all have skits or crafts to do to keep the girls interested. i do know that after 10 minutes of talking to my girl on the first night. . .i was bored myself.
how do i suggest that we do skits even though i'm only vice archon of chapter?

we don`t do skits either....haven't since before my time...I personally think it'd be nice, but i'm sure most actives and PNMs would think down on them...just the attitude around there.
The last couple recruitments they haven't even done songs(including Pref)!! the main reason is cuz they don't know any, but I made a tape for them, but they've lost it....a lot of girls think songs are cheesy too...but i know they'd change their mind, one of my sisters did on her first recruitment on the other side...she was reluctant to sing, but ended up having fun doing.
I'm not sure what to sugest. Maybe attend a recruitment committee meeting and bring it up there...or at an eboard meeting. Tell them all the pros to doing skits and discuss the cons...

hi there... in being Vice-Archon, I think that you are a little higher up on the food chain and they should respect your input... you are only trying to help make recruitment better... i know in the past that there have been little "themed" skits done by other sororities and the PNMs thought they were great... talk with the recruitment committee about the idea...
singing all our songs at recruitment is the best... this is what pumps all the girls up for recruitment and we all have a great time doing it...
best of luck!

wow... i love hearing about other schools that do COB because at the University of La Verne, we are not allowed to... but the BBQ idea sounds like fun and so does the garden party but you can also have a fun ice cream social or make cookies and play some games like BINGO sounds cheesy but you get a lot of white butcher paper and make large poster size game cards and have all the girls get into groups and they are the game pieces and you can play the lifesize BINGO... the movies are fun to watch, maybe some charades.. but sounds like you are on the right track.... best of luck to y'all!

OMG! The ice cream party reminded me of one I would like to do at Clarion...
I was a camp counselor, and in our handbook is a recipe for home made ice cream, in a bag!!!
It is so fun and easy! It would be greaaat for an open bid, and its not that expensive. Plus, it would take care of an activity and food. And, you could have the local dairy princess come in and do a presentation and get a health and wellness sisterhood out of the way, too!
If anyone would like the recipe, let me know!

Hey ladies...although the skit ideas are fun and enjoying, I wanted to warn you all that skits and scavenger hunts will get you into trouble if national finds out about them. It's considered hazing, just like everything else is. So, if you are going to do them, be careful and don't write about them on here!!! You never know who could be lurking on these boards!!!
Just my $0.02!

AFAIK skits during recruitment are ok...its just other places...like we used to do skits during our sisterhood after initiation and would have the NM bring the props, so that was a no-no...
but used as a recruitment tool, it's totally ok (as long as you're not forcing your sisters to participate!)

Hey Jess,
Post the recipe please, that sounds interesting.
Hey Nadia,
Great to see you on GreekChat. Are you coming to CSUDH for the Division Vision Refresher on Sunday? Lets plan to grab a bite to eat afterwards, spread the word to the rest of the Theta Upsilon sisters that are coming out.
Hugs,
Carolyn

Our chapter does do skits. Last year's recruitment was the first year in my 5 years that we did not do a skit. We do have skit ideas in old stuff and we have done them before. It just didn't work out last year. It is not a must in recruiting, but it does the trick as does other things like slide shows showing things like philanthropy, community service, sisterhood. It's all the same effect, just two ways to go about it.
