I wish people would stop having so much nostalgia about the 80s.

--My friend and I are going to drive around Lincoln Park listening to some 80s pop tonight just to show we're cool.

According to Entertainment Weekly...

There's an episode from this seasons Degrassi that they may or not show in the States. It's an episode surrounding Manny terminating a pregnancy. I would love to see this episode and how Manny and Craig (assuming it's Craig) deal with this.

Yet the episode of Degrassi High, where Erica gets an abortion, was aired in the US. How times change.

Apparently that episode has already aired in Canada. And it is Craig's. I'm going to be upset if they don't air it in the US, because one of the things I love about the show is that it deals with real teen issues... Why hide something from us that we know already exists? I guess they think it might encourage teenage girls to go out and terminate their pregnancies

They said it had to do with the "climate" in the States. Also, your last statement was something they alluded to. They said that their was a case of a teen who "cut" herself after viewing the episode about Ellie

Hmmm... I guess it's harder for me watching the show as an adult to realize the impact that it can have on teens who are going through a very emotional period. The show does try to send the right message though (like Paige's concern for Ellie, and Ellie seeking counseling), but it's a shame that kids are still out there imitating what they see on TV

But it's not like the kid wasn't going to start cutting if it wasn't for Degrassi. There are other TV programs that cover the same issues. There are segments on the news about self-injury all the time, as well as in magazines and newspapers. Not to mention websites, books -- more likely than not, the kid has friends who self-injure!

I hate the whole blame-it-on-TV mentality. Anybody who self-injures has serious emotional issues that lead to the cutting (or burning, starving, whatever their pain of choice is). It's not like someone who's perfectly happy is going to say, "Hey, I think it's a great idea to cut myself with a protractor!" If it wasn't Degrassi, it would have been something else that suggested it.

I think it's interesting that a Degrassi episode on the subject of abortion ran twenty years ago in the US but they're considering not running one now. It's possible that the newer episode deals with the issue in a more matter-of-fact way than the original, but we may never know if we don't get to see this one.
