Re: Curious
I have the utmost respect for the Founders of ALL of our organizations. I think that there is a distinction b/w "famous" and "notable." When I think "famous," perhaps Steve Harvey, Cedric the Entertainer----people in the entertainment and sports realms. When I think of "notable," I'm thinking of those movers and shakers in the political and education realms. That may be my own biases, but in my world, everyone plays a role. However, being on TV or throwing pigskin does not denote "notable" status----unless you're proactive (as opposed to merely proathlete) and socially conscious.
Now, I think some people expressed surprise that certain actors and so forth are members of certain organizations, NOT because of the organization's worth. I think that we sometimes do not imagine that some of these people even went to college, not to mention having pledged an organization.

nice answer
Acceptable answer. But I don't think that is everyones true reason for "shock." But maybe that's just MY belief! Still curious to hear others!
Thanks for the welcome.

WHAT? TRY AGAIN! Seriously, I think a lot of these inaccuracies get started from some basis in truth...i.e. if someone were asked to be an honorary member or placed on a roll of consideration...and some member took it and ran with it...u ever played the gossip game as a kid?

IMO, the only members in our respective orgs who are worthy of being labeled as "famous" would be the founders of each org. These pioneering men and women laid the foundation for each of our orgs. As college students in a time when being BLACK was not easy, these men and women struggled for what we have today -- not just our orgs, but a lot of the rights and privileges that we take for granted. XX amount of years ago, our founders had visions for sisterhood and brotherhood, scholarship, service, and the upliftment of our people and our communities.
Anyone else might have notoriety in another field, but those founding fathers and mothers of the Divine Nine orgs laid foundations in our orgs as well as the Black community.
|
Good Point there and I agree with you. Everyone else is living the dream that our Founder's intended, representing our beloved orgs to their fullest extent, blazing the path our Founders left behind...but then there are some who dont...

But I'm curious. I've been laughing as I read some of the post. Why would someone be "shocked" that a certain individual who is deemed as being famous pledged a certain frat or sorority? ALL our organizations have great foundations and should be held w/ the upmost respect! Does someone think a certain organization is not "good enough" to hold these members of prestige and influence? Not trying to cause an arguement, just curious.
Still curious to hear others!

And I am curious as to whether the genee in the lamp really exists....Seriously though, if some people's organizational choice is grounded in a belief system based on mistruths(to speak kindly) about other organizations then you are going to see people be "shocked" when things don't fit into what they believe as truth about other organizations... ...at the end of the day who cares? as long as u are grounded, idiocy and ignorant behaviour should never shake u. BTW, Welcome to GC!

I believe bruh was joking about the Zeta thing. But, you're absolutely right, rumors get started based on some truth---which is why I thought he wanted to be a Sigma or whatever. Would someone of Morris Chestnutt's relative success be asked to be an honorary? That would be interesting. Anyway.
Like I told rhapsody before, I don't think people expressed shock for the reasons she assumed they did. However, people certainly have their stereotypes, and when they find someone who does not "LOOK" or "ACT" like they should be a member of XYZ, they can make some ignorant comments, like..."you're pretty, you look more like an AKA than a Delta," or "she's thin to be a Zeta." I used to hear those comments made often, and I think...WHAT IN THE???
Okay, my fault, I know I'm taking this thread elsewhere....

**Yeah, I was joking. One of my best friends is a Sigma and an actor in Hollywood and he told me how Blair Underwood became a Sigma. If Morris Chestnut wanted to be a Sigma, he doesn't need to wait for the National Office to confer honorary status**.

**I hope Rhapsody1922 was not referring to my Raj from What's Happenin' comment because it should be evident that I was joking. Please be specific rather than make blanket assertions so that the "right" question is addressed by the "right" person. No one "looks like" an ABC, but some people may have an "ABC" persona (IMHO)**

As long as we continue to hold on to petty, biased, and ignorant beliefs we can never move forward as a people. Our House is Divided! When will this ever end?

There is no need for explanation as long as you can read what's been posted by some of these boards.....and see how some people react in real life....

Chapter / Year of Initiation ....this would clear the confusion
I've noticed that when quoting our notable members, many people don't know what chapter a certain member came thru. Many don't even know if the member chose the org on their own or were they honoraries. I think this information would be interesting and clear the confusion.

is Quincy Jones an Alpha, Que, or Sigma?
I read a post that someone thought Quincy Jones was an Alpha. I also heard he was a Q-Dog. I myself saw a website that said he was a Sigma. Can anyone of you PROVE he is in your fraternity?
