No, we don't do it that way. This colonization group would be considered "pledge class '08" regardless of class standing.

My prediction is they will take over total.

IrishPipes has total listed at 180 and I think it was mentioned in the big Alabama thread that most are around that size or over.

Yeah from my understanding total is 180, but i've read that many chapters have upwards of 250+ members.

OK, thanks KSUViolet...total is 180, we think.
I just looked back at that long Bama thread. I saw a quote from Aphigal that said:
Quote:
It's important on this campus to be ultra selective. So while we may have 300 or more interviews I would be highly surprised if we pledged to total this semester as some great women are either too shell shocked from formal recruitment to put themselved through another process.
|
What I'm saying is that I will be highly surprised if they pledge under total.
We'll see.
I wish Alpha Phi much good luck.

Exactly...your pledge class is the year (or semester & year) you pledged. Class standing in school has zero to do with it - colony or otherwise.

My daughter said that bids will be given out tomorrow and girls from other houses will be there to give them as much of the 'Bid Day at Alabama' as they can. They can't imitate the Squeal Run but they can give them a very festive atmosphere. I think it is amazing how all of the sororities have welcomed Alpha Phi. I think it says alot about the girls at Alabama, but I would imagine it is like that at other universities. I have never seen a colonization. My school did not have one colonize while I was there so I have been fascinated by the process at Alabama.

Are there any details (such as time, etc.) about bid day?

How great of the other sororities to welcome Alpha Phi pledges with a mock Bid Day! I'm so excited for this new pledge class and my sorority finally getting some presence in the SEC! I hope someone on GC will be able to post pics of the new pledge class.

Alabama now has a greek newsletter that they send to both greek members at the school but also to their parents. Here is a link to it. www.greeklife.ua.edu/Scroll11.html
The newsletter says that Bid Day is at 5:00pm and that they are hoping to bid 200 girls. That is so exciting!!

Generally speaking, at a colonization the idea is to take average campus size. So, say total is 180, but most groups run around 250 or even 265...then they'll shoot for around, say, 260.
There are bound to be some women who wind up turning down their bids...some who don't actually accept the bid immediately...some who accept the bid and drop after a couple of weeks...with that number, there are always some variations. I believe the women will probably be given a deadline by which to accept or decline a bid. They may even pick up a few more after Friday, to get to average chapter size.
That's just generally the case...YMMV.

I guess I think we can have both. Given the number of women Aphi interviews 400+, and saw at parties 400++ if we pledge close to total it still means we accepted aproximately 50% of the women who rushed Aphi. That is both quantity and quality.
I do not know how many bids will be extended...but I am excited to see pictures!!
Now onto bid day and the next question who will live in the house???
