Your bro posted the answer to that question earlier on in the thread. It's Cy Young.
My question is this, in reference to the "shot heard round the world". Yes, it was hit by bobby thompson, but WHO was on deck for the Giants when it was hit?

Sorry, I phrased the question wrong.
What I meant to say was, who holds the record for wins in a SEASON, and how many?
And the answer to your question is Willie Mays.

41 by Jack Chesbro in like 1903 or 04 - if you want 'more modern' then Dizzy Dean won 30 in the 1930s, I think
---------
Who was the last player to hit two inside-the-park homers in the same game? HINT: think "homer hanky"

Greg Gagne (former Yankees farmhand)
Who was the last pitcher to win more than 25 games in a season?
edited to add: Denny McLain won 31 games in the late 60s...he was the last to win 30, but I'm not sure if he has a more modern record

I already answered Kitso's question correctly a couple of spaces above your answer...but it's cool.
The Giants last won in 1954 when they beat the Cleveland Indians (huge upset because the Indians won 111 games during the regular season). That was the series that included "The Catch," Willie Mays' catch to rob Vic Wertz.
My Question: Who has the highest modern batting average for a season, and what is the average?

Our national past time is always held dear to Phis. No other fraternity has had such a lasting legacy on the game of baseball than Phi Delta Theta. 6 Phis are members of The Baseball Hall of Fame, more than any other fraternity. Phi Delta Theta also has the distinction of being the only fraternity to have an award officially recognized by a pro league, the Lou Gehrig Memorial Award. Given annually to the player who best exemplifies the giving character of Lou Gehrig both on and off the field, the presention makes headlines not only among the Phi Delt community but also in the Major League Baseball community.

Ty Cobb has the record. I don't know how many. (Over 50)
Who holds the record for most strike outs in a career? (Batting, not pitching)

He hit a game-winning homerun to cap off a rally in the bottom of the 9th, off of Ralph Branca. The controversy is that he probably stole the sign, so he knew a fastball was coming - Newbie fills in the gaps about why it's the Shot Heard 'Round the World (historical importance et al.

The radio broadcast of the 'shot heard round the world' is also significant as well:
"Hartung down the line at third, not taking any chances. Lockman without too big of a lead at second -- but he'll be running like the wind if Thomson hits one. Branca throws . . . There's a long drive! It's going to be, I believe . . . THE GIANTS WIN THE PENNANT! THE GIANTS WIN THE PENNANT!! THE GIANTS WIN THE PENNANT!!! THE GIANTS WIN THE PENNANT!!!! Bobby Thomson hits into the lower deck of the left field stands! The Giants win the pennant! And they're going crazy! They're going crazy! Oh, ho!"
-- Russ Hodges, Giants play-by play broadcaster.
Another nickname for the miraculous comeback of the Giants in the late stage of the '51 season was 'The Creeping Terror'.
Though I still think the Giants and the Dodgers shoulda stayed in Noo Yawk instead of packing up for the Left Coast.

We all know that Nolan Ryan holds the record for punchouts in a career - but he's also in the top 3 in a far more ignominious list, albeit one filled with Hall of Famers who wish they weren't there. What list is this? (ie he's third all-time in what undesirable statistic)
