Smile Ours is....

Our recruitment starts Sept. 15-19. I think it will be fun. Because I went through recruitment last year; so to be in it I think I'm going to have a blast. To the other Phi Sig Chapters good luck on fall recruitment.

Respectfully Yours

Annice, Epsilon Beta

Delta Epsilon has started recruitment (without me ) and it is going great! they`ve had around 100 women sign up and about 30 showed up to the first information party. (we have informal recruitment). If they bid even half of the ladies that showed up the first night that`ll be the biggest class in 10 years (i think...maybe exaggerating a little)

Keep up the good work everyone!!!

Hey Meghan,

How did recruitment go for your chapter?

We are the only NPC on campus so we don't do formal recruitment. This week was Welcome Week where all the clubs and organizations had tables out in the Sculpture Garden. We had 61 women sign up that said they are interested in Phi Sigma Sigma. Tuesday and Wednesay are our informational parties so I'm hope those 61 women will come as well as many more women. If we were to actually bid all 61 women we would triple in size - that would be awesome since all of them are quality women.

Wish us luck and good luck to all the other chapters.

Carolyn

HEY HEY !!!!!!!
SFSU just started recruitment last night and we had about 93 girls come through to visit the three NPC sorors on campus that means if they all stick through quota could be about 30 girls !!! (higher than it's been in YEARS at my school) YEAAAAAAAHHHHHHH I can't wait to go meet some more woman tonight.. last night was open house so we only got to talk to them for 15 minutes each.

Last night was our first evening of formal rush. We have parties Monday-Wednesday, Pref on Thursday, and Bid day on Friday. We had 20 women show up last night, but we know of quite a few women who could not make it to round one parties. We have one other national sorority on campus which would make qutoa probably between 10 and 15 depending on how many more women show up tonight and Wednesday. We are really excited, but were hoping for more ladies....but Greek life is not exactly booming on our campus. Total is 35 and we have 20 members currently, the other national has about the same, maybe a little less. So if we don't hit total we will try snap bidding or COB.
I'll keep you updated!
~Brooke

Our formal recruitment is always held the 2nd weekend in September. As far as preparing for recruitment. Our theme is decided on in the spring semester. We live on a commuter campus, so we are around each other during the summer. Typically, we have one large rush retreat, and then individual night meetings once month. But I know that isn't possible for chapters on campuses that are commuter.

need some flier ideas ladies.......

Formal recruitment is over and we are now on a campaign to get more girls!! Our goal is to have total by the end of this semester and I know our chapter can do it. Can you gals give me some flier ideas that you have used on your campus? Catchy phrases, but not to wordy. I have access to tons of clip art and a color printer, so the possibilities are endless.

Thanks!!
Leah

Do you chalk the walks? Going out and advertising the bid parties by chalking is fun!

I was thinking:

Aspire, Act, Achieve
Follow your heart to Phi Sigma Sigma!
The sisters of Phi Sigma Sigma want to meet YOU! (maybe use uncle sam?)
Live Laugh Love Phi Sigma Sigma

Unhappy I need help with COBing!!!

Zeta Omega chapter really needs help with COBing!!! I'm the Recruitment chair for the Zeta Omega chapter and we only took 2 women through formal recruitment and have only taken 2 women through COB, which started on Sept. 22. I just can't seem to get the women in my chapter motivated enough to try and recruit. I'm also having trouble just trying to get potential women interested in us. Please help!!!

phisigsmurf - have you guys had Vision yet?? it's REALLY helpful. my best advice is to just keep recruiting, recruiting, recruiting... even if it's just you! *you CAN make a huge difference*.

don't just bring PNMs over to the house - take them places where they can see the sisters having fun (ie house parties (NOT FRAT PARTIES), or bars, whatever... they aren't pinned yet, so they can still drink!) i know it sounds bad, but in my chapter when we tried to bring potentials to sisterhood activities, they always ended up kind of being bored/uncomfortable and never got really interested. despite our best efforts to break the ice and make it be a good time, it's just kind of an intimidating and awkward atmosphere. plus, they KNOW all the girls are looking at them as potential sisters.

whereas ones we invited to birthday parties or to happy hour or something like that got a chance to see us having a good time, plus sometimes potentials feel more comfortable when there are more people involved than just the sisters. anyway, the ones we took out with us almost always went phi sig.

also, be AGGRESSIVE. some girls may be if-fy, but don't give up on them! pick your best recruiter or someone who has a lot in common with the girl and DON'T LET HER GET AWAY. talk to them on a personal level about phi sig, and be straight with them. they'll appreciate your honesty and you'll feel better about the whole thing.

and don't be afraid to use your new members. they obviously are more in touch with PNMs than most of the older girls, so use them! have a dinner or something, and have each of the NMs invite two or three friends. just an idea.

finally, this is kind of tough to say cause i know you're far from quota... but QUALITY OVER QUANTITY. sometimes desperation can drive you to bid girls that will end up hurting the chapter much more than it will help it. don't let nationals pressure you into bidding poor quality women just to get your numbers up.

YOU CAN DO IT!!! we're all pulling for you. PM me if you need any more ideas, a lot of chapters on our campus do COB activities, and we've done some in the past too. good luck!!!

also, another thing i just remembered - go CRAZY with the publicity. campus newspaper ads, fliers everywhere, the whole nine yards. don't stop having informal rush parties and don't be embarrassed to publicly recruit. if you can't get your sisters excited enough to recruit on their own, use the media to do it for you. there are a lot of girls who may have missed rush or didnt think a sorority was for them, who might give it a second thought once they see other girls having so much fun with it - and it's the chapter's job to let them know they haven't totally missed out! just keep at it, dont give up!

With COB I suggest doing informal things like just going out to dinner or bowling or ice skating or whatever... I don't think you're supposed to EVER let a woman's first impression of the soror involve alcohol or boys.... at least one of the events I"m pretty sure is supposed to be strictly sisters... I mean personally I wouldn't want someone to join because we took her to a party... I mean the second activity could be a party or a group bar night or whatever... I say no matter what you do keep your spirits up and remind everyone that if they just bring one person that's potential for doubling the chapter right there if you like all of them.. and finding 1 girl isn't that hard AT ALL.. you'd have to be pretty lazy to justify not finding 1 girl at all..

for the record, i'm not saying you have to drink, or that they have to drink, or that there have to be boys involved. i'm just saying sometimes people feel more comfortable when there are other people around, rather than being one girl with tons of sisters.

some, not all, girls might find it intimidating. before i joined i went to one of these things for another house alone, and it was scary! it's just an idea - and of COURSE you wouldn't bid a girl just because she came to a party. do sisterhood stuff with her after she gets to know the girls in a more informal atmosphere... i think the most important thing is for the PNM to feel comfortable. bowling and dinners and stuff are great ideas too, just as long as the girl isn't nervous, is all i'm trying to say.

Hey PhiSigSmurf,

First off I have to say I love your name. Smurf is the nickname my boyfriend calls me. Not sure why to tell you the truth but I can safely say no one else had that nickname. Why Smurf, if you don't mind me asking.

Now to COB stuff. As PhiSig4Eva said - PUBLICITY. Put up random posters all over the place about Phi Sig. It doesn't necessarily have to be advertising an event. We had banners all over the campus this year and recruited 13 quality women this time - double the number we've recruited since we were installed 2 years ago.

Some cute sayings we had on banners were "Individually Unique, Together Complete" with little drawings of women of all races, sizes, etc. There was also the Phi Sigma Sigma We Are Family with a drawing of a family tree with sisters names on it. Another banner is "We may not be sisters by birth, but we knew from the start that God (or Fate) put us together to be sisters in heart - Phi Sigma Sigma" or Sisters by Chance, Friends by Choice.

The weather is a little bit warmer here in California so we can do picnics and bbq's. also, are any "Walks" going on in your area soon. We're participating in the AIDS Walk LA on the 20th and have invited interested women to join us. Let's them see our philanthropic side while getting to know us better.

Do you have Shakey's Pizzas in your area. We do a fundraiser at a Shakey's Pizza where we get a portion of sales. We invite all of the campus, our family, and friends to attend but we make sure special invitations go out to interested women and try to spend time getting to know them. Kills three birds with one stone, it's recruitment, social, and fundraiser all in one shot. If you can do this maybe make it mandatory that each sister invite at least one woman they think would me a quality sister.

Just some ideas, hope everyones suggestions are helping you out.

From one Smurf to Another,
Carolyn
