Post Ann Iverson had the babies, but only one survived

Now I've been rather critical of Allen Iverson's mother, but this is a sort of sad story about her babypeople:

God has been good to Ann Iverson
Ann Iverson counts her blessings in this time of trial
By PHIL JASNER
jasnerp@phillynews.com

NORFOLK, Va. - Mister Allen Iverson is a little more than 2 weeks old. He is the "personal business" Allen Iverson was attending to while the 76ers were in Salt Lake City and Dallas during the weekend.

Mister Allen Iverson, the Sixers star's little brother, was born Oct. 3 to Allen's mother, Ann. Allen's older son, Allen II, is Deuce. Mister Allen Iverson already has been designated as "Trey."

"Born Oct. 3, Allen wears No. 3, so the baby had to be Trey," Ann said cheerily before the Sixers dropped a 102-85 preseason decision to the New Orleans Hornets in the Ted Constant Convocation Center.

"He's Mister, because, back in the day, when our people picked cotton and such, the men were always called by their last name. I didn't want that for him. Then I wanted his middle name to be after someone famous. Allen's famous."

Ann Iverson is 44. She hadn't turned 16 when Allen was born. She sat in a front-row seat last night, directly across from the Sixers' bench, and said she was grateful for what she has. She gave birth to twin boys Oct. 3. Only Mister Allen survived.

"God took one and gave me one," Ann said. "I'm blessed. I remember waking up, seeing my new son. God has been good to me."

There were Allen Iverson sightings all over the Tidewater area during the weekend. At a high school football game Friday night. At a college game Saturday. At a lively party Sunday night at a restaurant not far from the Sixers' hotel. But Ann said Allen was where he needed to be when it meant the most.

"I have to thank [Sixers president/general manager] Billy King and the coaches for letting him come here," Ann said. "We sat and talked and reminisced. Allen was counting the baby's fingers and toes, getting real emotional. It was important to us to be together."

Everything, though, has a price. Ann agreed with a suggestion that people weren't sure whether to offer congratulations or condolences, but she insisted on being among the 8,136 fans who came to revel in Allen's homecoming. Allen was a football and basketball star at Bethel High in Hampton, leading the football team to a Virginia state championship.

Iverson was on the Sixers' bench for the entire first quarter, in part, coach Randy Ayers said, because the team had added several new plays and nuances. Iverson also was not with his teammates at the morning shootaround.

"I had no problem with Allen coming down here," Ayers said before the game. "If I had, I wouldn't have let him come. He came here to take care of business, and he did that."

Iverson entered the game at the start of the second quarter and didn't come out until just 39.9 seconds remained. Ayers had said he planned to use him for 34 to 35 minutes, and he stuck to that plan. Iverson, as the fourth reserve off the bench, finished with 20 points, six assists, five rebounds and one turnover. The Sixers, though, trailed by as many as 20 points and never came closer than nine in the second half.

Derrick Coleman, who started at power forward, sat out the second half after needing two stitches to close a cut on his lip. Aaron McKie, who started at shooting guard, sat out the second half with a sore lower back. Ayers said he expected both players back "by the end of the week," although there was no way to know whether they will play Thursday night in the final preseason game against the New Jersey Nets at the Wachovia Center.

If Iverson had been uncomfortable with his family's situation, he said: "My mom made it a lot easier, because, after losing a child and coming here, I thought she wouldn't be too upbeat. But I guess that's how much she loves me."

"The whole time I was here," Allen said, "she was upbeat. It kind of seemed like it didn't even happen. The biggest thing is, God gave her one baby. Another one went to a better place. It's kind of bittersweet."

Ann said she knew she was supposed to be resting, but she felt she needed to be at the game. Allen already was looking ahead to a time when Deuce, his 2-month-old son Isaiah, and his new brother Trey were "going to kind of grow up together."

"Hopefully, I'll be able to play long enough that my little brother can come to a game and see how the fans treat me, and be part of that."

All anyone saw of the Sixers on the court last night was a group of players who have yet to have all their pieces together. Starting forward Kenny Thomas remained out with what the Sixers have termed a right flank contusion. Backups Greg Buckner (strained left hamstring) and Monty Williams (tendinitis, left knee) remained in Philadelphia, taking therapy.

"It's a matter of having more time together, working the chemistry out on the floor," Ayers said. "Getting Allen back on the floor, then losing DC and Aaron, we didn't have a chance to build on what I thought was good chemistry after two games in Utah [a loss] and Dallas [a victory]."

Ayers also recognized what Allen - a three-time NBA scoring champion and former Most Valuable Player - means to the Sixers.

"He changes the game," Ayers said. "If we put the ball in his hands in transition, he changes the game."

Arrow Mary J. Blige, Eve Head To The Barbershop For 'Not Today' Clip

It's too bad some people miss the Mary J. Blige of old — the pained, intense, soul-stirring period of her life that yielded some of her most recognizable hits. Blige is now at peace with her demons and it's resulting in another creative peak in her career. That period will continue with the release of her new single and video, "Not Today," the second offering from her latest album, Love & Life.

Like a lot of the songs from Blige of late, "Not Today," which features Eve, is sung from the perspective of a woman empowered with knowledge and in full control of her actions. This is an older, wiser Mary advising young girls not to get twisted in a man's game, no matter how sweet he might seem.

When it's released within the next two weeks, the track will double as the lead single from the soundtrack to "Barbershop II." It's only appropriate, then, that the video for the song is also set in a barbershop — and it includes cameos from the flick's stars, Eve and Cedric the Entertainer, as well as scenes from the film itself.

Directed by Chris Robinson, the clip features a sexy Mary visiting a local social hot spot — the barbershop — and witnessing the flirtatious actions of a man who seems to be too distracted by several women to ever stick to just one. Eve and Mary watch the shenanigans amusedly.

Some highlights to look out for in the clip include Mary and Eve being transported to colorful, imaginative scenes via a View-Master toy and — especially for fans of Eve's body — a sequence of shots that feature Eve in fetish gear.

The soundtrack to "Barbershop II" will be released in January, one month before the film.

Destiny's Child Promise Two Albums In 2004

With Beyoncé's status as a pop icon growing by the millisecond, many have questioned whether or not she would in fact rejoin her group, Destiny's Child, to record another album like she's vowed she would. Well according to her record label, the naysayers will turn true believers come next year.

Destiny's Child will soon be coming back at full power, putting out two new albums in 2004. The first LP is currently slated for a February release, just in time for Valentine's Day. That opus will show that Beyoncé isn't the only one in the trio who is "crazy in love." The group's rep says the project will be themed around romance.

Later in 2004, a traditional DC3 album is supposed to come down the pike and focus on more than amorous musical premises.

But before they jump the gun and leap into next year's undertakings, the women of Destiny's Child are still deep into solo endeavors. Michelle has just signed on to take over the lead from Toni Braxton in the Broadway musical "Aida" in the next few weeks. Meanwhile, Beyoncé is far from finished milking her musical cash cow — the multiplatinum, number-one-single-spawning Dangerously in Love.

B has chosen "Me, Myself and I" as the third single and wants to shoot the video in about a week and a half, possibly in New York. She's still deciding which director will helm the clip.

I read on the CNN headline ticker last evening that Vivica is interested in the Foxy Brown remake, since her "kick butt" role in Kill Bill. Also, Halle Berry is interested in the lead, as well.

Mister?

What happened to Ann Iverson is a tragedy, honestly!

But Mister Allen Iverson???? Way to give the kid an inferiority complex early.

And they call him Trey? Where does Trey come out of Mister or Allen?

David Gest Sues Liza Minnelli for $10M
Oct 21, 6:18 PM EST

Producer David Gest sued Liza Minnelli for $10 million Tuesday, accusing his estranged wife of alcohol-fueled violence that caused neurological damage and headaches.

Gest, 50, alleges in court papers that Minnelli, 57, flew into drunken rages on several occasions on both sides of the Atlantic, insulting and striking him.

Liz Rosenberg, a spokeswoman for the singer, said Minnelli had not seen the lawsuit and could not comment. Minnelli's lawyer, Allen Arrow, did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Minnelli and Gest separated in July, just 16 months after they wed at a celebrity-studded ceremony that featured best man Michael Jackson carrying the bride's train. Elizabeth Taylor served as maid of honor.

In papers filed in Manhattan Supreme Court, Gest alleges that Minnelli began battering him before the wedding.

Gest's lawyer, Raoul Felder, said his client suffered neurological damage and headaches from the alleged attacks, and is staying at a rehabilitation clinic in Honolulu.

In one incident last June in London, court papers allege Minnelli consumed a bottle of vodka before she threw a lamp at Gest in their hotel suite.

She later "began beating (Gest) about the head and face with her fists," the lawsuit said. When Gest asked a security guard to intervene, court papers say Minnelli punched him in the stomach.

When the couple married in March 2002, attendees said Minnelli danced in happiness at the altar. Hundreds of fans lined Fifth Avenue to watch guests including actors Michael Douglas, Anthony Hopkins and David Hasselhoff, rocker Elton John and TV news personality Barbara Walters arrive in limousines.

The wedding marked a personal comeback for Minnelli, the daughter of Judy Garland and director Vincente Minnelli. She has won an Academy Award, an Emmy, two Golden Globes and three Tony Awards but also battled substance abuse, weight gain, and a near-fatal bout with encephalitis.

Gest, an event and concert promoter, produced Jackson's 30th Anniversary tribute concert.

They call him Trey because he is really Allen Iverson the third. The first is Allen, the second is his son, and now his brother is the third.

De Niro Diagnosed with Prostate Cancer

STEPHEN M. SILVERMAN

The Raging Bull has another fight on his hands: Robert De Niro has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, his publicist announced Monday.
Prognosis for the "Raging Bull" and "The Godfather, Part II" Oscar winner's recovery is good, the rep added.

"Doctors say the condition was detected at an early stage because of regular checkups," publicist Stan Rosenfield said in a statement. "Because of the early detection and his excellent physical condition, doctors project a full recovery."

Rosenfield declined to provide further details about the actor's condition or course of treatment, but said De Niro, 60, still planned to fulfill his commitment to start shooting his next film, "Hide and Seek," early next year.

"Obviously," Rosenfield tells the Associated Press, "things will need to be postponed a little bit."

In the U.S., nearly 221,000 men every year are reportedly diagnosed with the disease, and 29,000 die from it. But in survival rates cited by the American Red Cross, 85 percent of all prostate cancers are, as was apparently the case with De Niro, discovered in early stages.

The five-year relative survival rate for patients whose tumors are diagnosed at this point is 100 percent, says the Red Cross.

Destiny's Child Accused of Song Stealing

STEPHEN M. SILVERMAN

Beyonce Knowles, her manager-father and Destiny's Child members Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams have all been slapped with a $200-million lawsuit that charges their 2001 hit song "Survivor" was stolen from a Miami-based producer, reports the Associated Press.

The producer, Terrence "T-Robb" Robinson, claims in papers filed in Houston, Texas, federal court on Oct. 14 that he delivered his June 2000 song "Glorious" to Mathew Knowles, Beyonce's father, and believed the tune would provide him with his big career break.

"I know right now I would be one of the biggest, most sought-after producers," Robinson, 32, said at a news conference Tuesday.

Robinson's lawyer, Peter J. Clarke, claims his client subsequently heard the song used in a commercial, without his permission. (The lawyer also said that Robinson did not copyright the song until after he allegedly gave it to Mathew Knowles.)

A lawyer for Beyonce Knowles, Thomas Sulkerson, told AP he had not yet seen the lawsuit, but said Destiny's Child filed a lawsuit earlier this month accusing Robinson of libel, fraud and breach of contract.

Mathew Knowles also notes that this is hardly the first lawsuit to make claims on "Survivor": "Three people have said they have either written or did the music or the lyrics were about them," he said. "So somebody has got to be lying."

Knowles is quoted by AP as saying he was not aware of Robinson until three weeks ago, when he informed Robinson that he had nothing to do with the track. He credited the lyrics to "Survivor" to Destiny's Child and the track's production to State of Mind Muzic producer Anthony Dent.

Sony Music and Columbia Records did not have an immediate response to the Oct. 14 lawsuit, nor did a management company for State of Mind Muzic.

Shouldn't the 3rd be Allen's son?

The song wasn't copywritten so it was pretty much fair game. That's why you copyright stuff b/4 handing it over.
