I guess I can see both sides of the North-South debate. I was born in Hartford, CT and have lived in Columbia, SC. I can appreciate both worlds. Now I call Louisville, KY my home which is a culture in its self. But, I have to say I like the baseball in the North, go Yankees! I will be a Yankees fan no matter where I live. And I have to say I love those southern beaches on the Gulf. And now living in Louisville, I have to drive 10 hours to get to a beach. Anyways, I think we can all agree there are pluses and minuses about both worlds. And my city encompasses both, I have to say, that's why I love it.

I love the Northeast I love having actual seasons, and New York and Boston are both amazing cities.
I'm not getting into the baseball debate, though...

Being a Jersey girl (just outside of Philadelphia) and going to school in North Carolina, I get the best of the South vs. North thing. I have learned to love sweet tea and Waffle House, I actually watch college basketball, and the word "y'all" has become a staple of my vocabulary. However, there are definitely things that just say home....
1. CHEESE STEAKS. I don't care how many "Jersey Mike's" or "Philly Connections" you've got, there is nothing like the genuine article.
2. The Jersey shore. Cape May, Wildwood, Stone Harbor, Sea Isle, Atlantic City...where you can visit Sorrento's I-VI on the same strip of boardwalk, ride the rides, and get the best fudge in the whole world.
3. Everything that's been said about fall and then some. It's the most crisp, comforting, beautiful season of the year.
4. The wealth of history, too. Every time I go into the city, there are more things to see, more history to learn.
5. "Land of a 1,000 Wawa's." If you don't know Wawa, you're missing out.
6. Philly sports...I don't care how many times the Phillies, Flyers, 76ers, or Eagles ALMOST make it, I'll still be there next year for all the heart-breaking action.
I know there's a lot of folks (heh, another Southernism) posting on Boston and New York, both wonderful places to be, but I just wanted to post my little ode to Philadelphia.

I could never live outside of the NE.
Once you leave there are no more Jamaicans! What would I do without my roti? Without my bacalao? Without my fried plaintain?
The South is nice, but it seems to be all about American (black or white American, whatever, still American) culture (maybe Mexican culture in some parts as well). Of course after living in NYC for most of my life ANYWHERE is bound to feel more homogenous. I grew up surrounded by too many different cultures to be happy outside of the NE.
Side Note: The Yankees ROCK. BRONX BOMBERS BABY!!!!!

I'm with you. I think we all felt bittersweet when the Yanks won the year after Donny Baseball retired.

I grew up in Connecticut but now live in Arkansas. I've lived in both for about equal times.
WHAT I LOVE ABOUT THE NORTH: lots of snow, great seafood, GREAT arts programs in schools(especially music...at least where I was from), diversity, and non-humid summers
WHAT I HATE ABOUT THE NORTH: rude people
WHAT I LOVE ABOUT THE SOUTH: friendly people (people will wave at you even if you don't know them), southern cuisine(gotta love catfish and hushpuppies, and greens, and all that good fattening stuff ),
WHAT I HATE ABOUT THE SOUTH: the horrible humid summers, it's hard to find seafood, people are more closed minded, the racism, and the morons who fly their little rebel flags

You Might Be A Yankee If:
Author Unknown
You think barbecue is a verb meaning "to cook outside."
You think Heinz Ketchup is SPICY!
You don't have any problems pronouncing "Worcestershire sauce" correctly.
For breakfast, you would prefer potatoes au gratin to grits.
You don't know what a moon pie is.
You've never had grain alcohol.
You've never, ever, eaten okra.
You eat fried chicken with a knife and fork.
You've never seen a live chicken, and the only cows you've seen are on road trips
You have no idea what a polecat is.
You don't see anything wrong with putting a sweater on a poodle.
You don't have bangs.
You would rather vacation at Martha's Vineyard than Six Flags.
More than two generations of your family have been kicked out of the same prep school in Connecticut.
You would rather have your son become a lawyer than grow up to get his own TV fishing show.
Instead of referring to two or more people as "y'all," you call them "you guys," even if both of them are women.
You don't think Howard Stern has an accent.
You have never planned your summer vacation around a gun-and-knife show.
You think more money should go to important scientific research at your university than to pay the salary of the head football coach.
You don't have at least one can of WD-40 somewhere around the house.
The last time you smiled was when you prevented someone from getting on an on-ramp on the highway.
You don't have any hats in your closet that advertise feed stores.
The farthest south you've ever been is the perfume counter at Neiman Marcus.
You call binoculars opera glasses.
You can't spit out the car window without pulling over to the side of the road and stopping.
You would never wear pink or an applique sweatshirt.
You don't know what applique is.
You don't know anyone with at least two first names (i.e., Joe Bob, Faye Ellen, Billy Ray, Mary Jo, Bubba Dean)
You don't have doilies, and you certainly don't know how to make one.
You've never been to a craft show.
You get freaked out when people on the subway talk to you.
You can't do your laundry without quarters.
None of your fur coats are homemade.

I can agree with all of that, except...

Maybe it should be 'don't know any men with two first names'. But all my babysitters when I lived up north were named Mary Catherine, Mary Ellen, Mary Beth etc. (Mary was very popular )

Re: Being a Notherner or Yankee
Three great things about being in the north:
1. Maintain a great skin color of pasty/creamy white
2. Temp. range of -20 degrees in winter to 100 degrees in summer.
3. Get to use cool words like "hey der", "eh", "up nort" and "er no?" (see example)
EX. Hey der, you want to go up nort, er no? Sounds like fun, eh?

I thought that they should give Mattingly a ring after he retired.

Hell yeah I did. Don Mattingly is my favorite athlete of all-time. He had class and was a hell of a ballplayer. He's still my favorite, even if he didn't get the ring.

Some may try to say we're rude, or unclassy, but I love being a Yankee gal!!! Especially in NY!
Southern girls may be sweet as pie, but everyone knows that too much sugar can make you sick. Northern girls are bold and brutally honest, so when we decide to be sweet it's twice as rewarding cuz you know it must be genuine!
Northern girls are not afraid to be who they are, even if that means busting out on the street after rolling out of bed(and somehow we still manage to make it look intentionally stylish!). No worries about little Miss Edna "blessing our hearts," cuz we have no quams about telling little Miss Edna where she can shove it!
Everyone up north knows that "bitch" really means Being In Total Control of Herself. But we'll still slap you if you try to call us one.
But we know how to be kind and affectionate too, especially when those crazy winters show up and we need to cuddle up to keeep warm!
