The Little Mermaid Fairy Tale was written by Hans Christian Andersen, a Danish guy who wrote the fairy tale in Europe more than 100 years ago in 1836 and then it was translated into English & other languages (BTW: in the original fairy tale, it is NOT a HAPPY ENDING). You can read the original here. Sometimes the story is also called "The Little Sea-Maid"...go figure. Of course, Disney sanitized the tale to make it a happy ending (Because we can't have a sad ending, if it is Disney, right?). BTW: There is a statue of a little mermaid in Copenhagen, Denmark (and no, she doesn't look like Ariel!).

Anyhow, maybe a Disney animator did put in some subtle Zeta symbols in there. I don't know..I wasn't looking that closely.
King Trident does have a crown...which is very Zeta. But then again, his name is Trident and he carries one too: which to me, suggests Delta Delta Delta (not to mention, he rides a dolphin...also very TriDelta!)

However, I think it is interesting that I should share that I also heard rumors that if you look at the castle in either The Little Mermaid or Alladdin (can't remember which Disney movie it was), supposedly the pillars holding up the castle, resemble...ahem...."phalluses" .
I never actually noticed it myself, but if you happen to be watching those movies and notice something "improper", please come back and tell us all (so we can go see for ourselves...LOL)!

And....Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.-Groucho Marx

Cool

I also remember seeing a REAL Beta Theta Pi Pledge Paddle in that old show, "Coach" with Craig T. Nelson in it.

And: I remember that show, I think it was called "A Different World" with Jasmine Guy in it. And there was a BGLO in it, I think it was a music fraternity. It had Lambda Nu in its letters, but I don't remember the name exactly!

I know that when I initiated into Alpha Chi Omega, I made a pledge to NEVER reveal anything secret through SPOKEN, WRITTEN, JESTURATIVE (is that a word!!) or any other form outside of initiation. That includes movies (although I don't think i'll be producing any movies any time soon!)

Symbols are something to be proud of, but secrets should NEVER be revealed.

I highly doubt they went and told everyone, "hey these things that I am putting in the movie/songs are actual secrets of my sorority/fraternity" they are just proud of their organization. Think of it as an inside joke with the brothers and sisters.

its weird seeing old A-team episodes and knowing that george peppard was a beta (he is deceased now I believe). also when I see old episodes of Coach and there is a Beta paddle in his office (he is not a Beta but the story is one the crew members was and it is his pledge paddle). I saw Jay Fiedler wearing a Beta t-shirt from his dartmouth days in an abc interview a few years back. thats about all I can thin of off the top of my head

CutiePie2000... I dont know if it's done purposely or not, but a lot of Disney movies have some sort of sexual reference in them. I can't be sure if it's intentional or if people just think that way because this is a new generation and people just tend to be more sexually-oriented, but there are scenes that sex is apparent...

Example: many people believe the castle on the cover of "the little mermaid" is representative of the male reproductive organs... possible, but purposely done?

Example: Also in "the little mermaid" during the scene where "vanessa" is marrying the prince, the priest has something moving under his robes near his, um, pelvic area... watch it, you'll see.

Example: In "aladdin," during the scene where he flies up on the magic carpet to jasmine's balcony, if you turn the volume up really loud, it sounds like he says "take your clothes off." This could just be fuzz... who knows.

I know of others because I have friends who work at Disneyland and are obsessed with finding these things... But don't take my word for it.

Cute side note: something definitely true is the Disney "subliminal Mickey's..." at Disneyland (not sure about other Disney parks), on every ride there is a subliminal Mickey head hidden (the head and ears symbol). I've found it on a few rides and it's really cool! Makes the trip more fun!

I don't think the hidden mickeys are meant to be subliminal, but they are neat.

There's a website devoted to them here.

(Actually, there's a lot of cool hidden things at Disney -- like the little gopher on Splash Mountain at WDW that pops out of his hole and says "Go FSU!")

In the 1999 movie October Sky.... the teacher (not the actress, the real teacher) was an ASA. I think it's kinda cool because the whole movie exemplifies our open motto of Aspire, Seek, Attain...and also our closed mottos (can't tell ya how though )

Friends

I have a question for you Kappas! In episodes of Friends there are always Fleur de Lises (SP?) in the background. Is there a Kappa connection here or is it merely coincidence? Just wondering!

I posted this in the Chit Chat section...

...but thought there might be interest in this forum too:

Patsy Ramsey was an AXiD...(heard this from an Atlanta AXiD who was mortified when Patsy and hubby moved to Atlanta -- "Gawd I hope she doesn't get involved with our group!")

Gamma Phi Beta has an Oscar Winner -- Cloris Leachman (won 1971 Best Support Actress Oscar for The Last Picture Show and Pulitizer Prize winner: Mary Wells Ashworth wrote a biography on George Washington that won a Pulitizer in 1958

other sorority factoids I know of:

The only sorority with royalty is DZ -- Crown Princess Martha of Norway (I think she is still alive too) was initiated when she was in the US -- in North Dakota or Wyoming or Nebraska -- can any DZ's shed light on this one?

AEPhi's Ruth Bader Ginsburg is one of our nation's Supreme Court Justices; Sandra Day O'Conner's mom is a Gamma Phi...

Sarah Tilghman Hughes (DG) was the first female federal judge; she swore in LBJ on the plane after JFK assassination

Margaret Chase Smith (Sigma Kappa) first woman elected to the US House of Reps and Senate

Zeta's Dr Ellen Zwilich is the first and only female winner of the Pulitzer Prize in Music (1983)

In 1938, KD's Pearl Buck was the first American woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature for The Good Earth -- this book also won the Pulitzer prize

TriDelta's Doris Kearns Goodwin won the Pulitzer Prize in History in 1995 for No Ordinary Time about FDR and Eleanor Roosevelt

Artist and KD Georgia O'Keeffe has won the Medal of Freedom -- the nation's highest civilian honor (not sure what year though)

Other sorority Oscar winners:
Faye Dunaway -- Pi Phi -- 1995: Best Actress "Network"
Joanne Woodward -- ChiO -- 1957: Best Actress "Three Faces of Eve"
Patricia Neal - ChiO -- 1963: Best Actress "Hud"
Christine Lahti - DG -- 1995: Best Short Film -- Live Action (she was the director)
Eilene Heckert - PiPhi - 1972: Best Supporting Actress "Butterflies Are Free"
Edith Head -- DZ -- 7 (that's seven!!) Oscars for costume design

Sherry Lansing -- Sigma Delta Tau -- first female head of a movie studio

First woman aviator to fly solo around the world (1964) Jerri Mock (Phi Mu)

Space Shuttle astronauts:
Jan Davis = AXiD
Rhea Seddon = Sigma Kappa
Bonnie Dunbar = KD
Anna Fisher = PiPhi
the late Judith Resnick (killed in Challenger explosion)= AEPhi (thank you AEPhi alum!)
the late Laurel Clark (killed in Columbia explosion) = Gamma Phi

Two sorority women have been Miss Universe:
Sylvia Hitchcock (1967) - Chi O
Shawn Weatherly (1980)- TriDelta

Marlo Thomas was at Theta at my alma mater (Southern Cal) and that is why she flies a kite during the opening credits of her old TV show "That Girl"
