My thought is that the stolen badges have surely been melted by now. Most badges have engraving on the reverse, and that would make them instantly identifiable as stolen property. You know Tri-Delta has kept records of returned badges, which makes it simple to prove ownership (unlike the ridiculous recent case of the "friend" of ***********, who claimed ownership of KKG badges that were being legitimately sold on an auction site, publicly accusing the seller of selling stolen property, but could never prove ownership of said badges.).

I believe that this will be solved, but have no expectation that any of those badges will be recovered.

suspects arrested!

Two people have been arrested in the theft of the Tri Delta badges. Some badges have already been recovered. Police are working to get other badges back. They have also cut the number of stolen badges from 5000 to closer to 2000-2500.

do you have a link to the news story about this?

ETA: there is an update on TriDelta's website. And it was an employee (not a TriDelta alumna), along with another man.

Since it was an employee, what was her motive? Was she not paid enough and thought she would get big bucks for them? Was it out of spite?

I wonder if this will make other groups look into their employees also, maybe it's better that members of each org actually work at these places.....

How sad that it was an employee, but I think we all knew it was probably an inside job.

I wonder about this from a Sexual Discrimination angle. Can (flips coin) Pi Pi Pi sorority limit the hire of the person who answers the phones to Pi Pi Pi sisters or would that be viewed as simply slightly more complicated case of limiting the hiring to women only?

Would it be different if the group was co-ed?

Why is it "better" if employees of an organization are members of the same organization (or any other, for that matter)? Why put current employees under close scrutiny now, especially if there hasn't been a problem? Ideally that was done prior to the employee being hired.

We've had reported cases of alumni (I'm not talking about Theta, FYI - use google, you'll see what I'm referring to) stealing from their own organizations. This is simply a matter of better safekeeping/storage/security etc. I'm a huge believer in security cameras. Amazing what happens when cameras are installed.

Speculating about motives in a theft is comical, at best. I'm pleased that there have been arrests. Good work by the Arlington PD.

Naraht, one of the suspects IS a woman, and there are stories (some on GC) where an alumna/alumnus was found to have embezzled or otherwise committed a crime against the sorority/fraternity. Membership is not necessarily a means of protection.

Just as a point of curiosity, I wonder whether said employee showed up for work the day following the theft .... And I am still trying to get my head around the sheer stupidity of taking thousands of badges at one time. However, that stupidity helped alert TriDelta to the theft (versus a few badges now and then), and I am so glad that many of the badges have been recovered and that the estimate of loss is substantially lower.
