I've been seeing a lot of "Amy Winehouse doesn't deserve to be a member of the 27 club, she wasn't as prolific as Janis Joplin or Kurt Cobain" comments, which is weird to me.
I mean, she was an artist, she died at 27, she was famous... I'm not sure if there are many more requirements to being "a member of the club" if that's even a good thing to be.
Addiction is so hard. RIP Amy.

God, it's not like it's something to be proud of. People astound me. Unfortunately fame and addiction rarely mix well. I saw Amy in August 2007 at Virgin Fest in Baltimore. She looked terrible, and her life and career spiraled just a month later. I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy, much less on someone with so much wasted talent.

Tragic. I can't imagine getting too worked up about it though. I deal with addiction issues professionally every work day (and unfortunately on the weekends with some clients I regret giving my cell out to). I don't want to speculate as to what went wrong/who to blame. It's just damn tragic any time someone dies in such an extremely preventable way.
I don't see a reason to get overly worked up about this death or any other. They're all tragic. This one was in the news, it needs to be talked about, if for nothing else, to continue to expose the fact that addiction can be and often is a fatal illness.
I never really listened to her music, but from the little I've heard, I think she'll be remembered for a long time.

I haven't been on GC since this happened and I am heart-broken. In her short life, she made such an impact on music. I keep playing her songs in my head.
On a different note, I have challenged many of my friends to this: If the same thing happened to Lindsey Lohan, would we all be so sad? Just curious?

I don't watch Lindsay Lohan's movies every week like I listen to Amy Winehouse's music every week...but I'm sure there are people out there who do and who would feel the same way.
If anything Lindsay's life as a whole has probably been sadder because of her immensely screwed up family situation. From all accounts, Amy comes from a very loving family that didn't treat her as a meal ticket.

Y'all aren't the only ones . . .
http://www.salon.com/news/media_crit..._amy_winehouse
From the article:
Poor Amy Winehouse. Not only did the 27-year-old singer, who had a troubled history of drug and alcohol abuse, have the misfortune to die this weekend in London of yet undisclosed causes, she did so in the midst of an already jampacked cycle of terrible news. And everybody knows that a) people can only feel bad about one thing at a time, and that b) in what the U.K. Guardian helpfully refers to as the "hierarchy of death," it's wrong to care about a single individual when there are higher body counts elsewhere in the world. Let the sanctimony begin!
