If as was stated that the Professor showed proper ID, that should have taken care of the situation. If Gates became beligerent, then the officer has the right to do what he did. The problem then seems that it got out of hand on both sides which was not needed.
It seems like poor judgement with both partys.

Hm, you seem to have a deep seated problem here.
Not every white has the same feelings and not every black does either. True or false? As I see it, none of us were there and actually know what truely happened one way or the other.
So now because I say something you assume a terrible lot and from what is read and posted here by some who seem pretty radical and as some say, play the racist card. That is not suppose to a problem on this site but I may be in error. So I guess is this is a problem among some supposedly educated people. I see or feel a lot of racism on this site.

Yeah, I have a "deep-seated" knowledge that you're drunk half the time.

From the picture I saw on the news the arresting officers hooked him up in the front. I find that pretty interesting.

Because if he's nonthreatening enough to allow a front cuff, why is he being arrested in the first place?

The police report or the article I read last night explained that Gates uses a cane and the officer went and got the cane for him. The front cuff was to facilitate that I think. But on some level, that makes it weirder because it would mean he was armed with a cane, but maybe they didn't give it to him until he was released?

This whole debate kind of reminds me of what I was trying to tell my ex-husband once when he was griping about traffic tickets. When he gets pulled over, he gets really grouchy sounding, curt, gruff and everything he says has sort of an argumentative tone. When I get pulled over, I get timid, near tears, passive. Guess who gets more actual tickets?

HAHA. He does.
Part of that is also a gender effect.

Pretty much my line of thought.
However, I'm not sure of the Dr. Gates' age. In some departments age comes into consideration on how suspects are transported.

He is 58.
So if he was nonthreatening enough to cuff in the front (due to age, the situation had calmed enough to avoid a struggle, or because he has a cane), why is he being arrested? LOL.

Hmmm maybe they thought it was a loaded cane.
With all the talk of speeding, I thought about my friend who lives in Orlando in Windermere. The speed limit is 35. She has gotten THREE tickets for driving 36 in a 35 zone. The cops around here are pretty flexible. They don't really bother you unless you are going maybe 10 miles over the speed limit.
